Venetia Wilcox Smith, of
Scotland Neck, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home September 30th, surrounded by loving family members.
Venetia was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 15, 1933. She received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and taught 19 years in the High Point City and Guilford County school systems. She later received her certification in addiction counseling, specializing in family counseling at Fellowship Hall in Greensboro, then Step One Outpatient Treatment Center in Winston-Salem. She developed her own private practice in family counseling and continued that until her retirement in 1998.
Venetia was also an avid reader and supporter of local libraries. Upon her retirement, not only did she serve on the board of the Asheboro Senior Citizen Center, but she was also instrumental in establishing the new public library in Seagrove. She was a member of the Randolph County Friends of the Library, started the Ladies Book Club in Seagrove, and then after moving to Scotland Neck started the Ladies Book Club of Scotland Neck. She also enjoyed playing bridge, mahjong and many other card games.
Venetia was a member of the Methodist Church.
Venetia is survived by daughters Susanna Routh (Chuck) of Mt. Gilead, NC, Laurie Coppage (Kevin) of Murfreesboro, TN, Amanda Henderson,
Scotland Neck, NC and sons Timothy Greene (Laura Oakley) of Burlington, NC and Andy Greene (Rhonda Warren) of Kernersville, NC, as well as eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Geneva Wilcox and beloved husband Ted Smith.
There will be a memorial service on October 26th at Scotland Neck Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00 – 10:45 followed by the memorial service at 11:00. An additional service will be held in Seagrove NC on November 2nd. at Seagrove United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family there will be at the church at 10:00 – 10:45 followed by the memorial service at 11:00. Anyone that would like to join the family to celebrate Venetia's life, is welcome to join us in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
