Verna Savola Mathis, age 100, a resident of Lakeview, GA, for 72 years, passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2022 at her home. She was born on March 2, 1922 in Bridgeport, AL, to John and Ella Janeway.
Verna's late husband, the Rev. W.B. (Bud) Mathis, pastored several area Baptist churches where she had an active role. She worked for many years at Peerless Woolen Mills and Parkside nursing home.
Verna's warm, caring and encouraging manner endeared her to all who knew her. Family was everything to Verna, and she was a constant inspiration and source of love for them. She delighted in celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends this year.
She was predeceased by sisters Violet and Vivian Janeway, sister Viola Janeway Colvin, and brothers Raymond, Roy, Rexie and Alton Janeway.
Verna is survived by daughter Joy (Paul) Caylor, son William (Patricia) Mathis, six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 15, 2022 and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at W.L. Wilson and Sons Funeral Home Fort Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m Friday Dec. 16, 2022 in the Wilson chapel with pastors Bryce Williams and Dan Mouw officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens South.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Anchor of Hope Baptist Church at 2613 Lakeview Drive, where Verna was a devout member for many years.
