Verna E. Phenicie, 93, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at her home. Born July 31, 1931 in Mercersburg, PA, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Bessie Gordon Dorty. Her beloved husband, Roy Phenicie, preceded her in death on January 3, 2008.
Verna was a graduate of Mercersburg High School. She was employed at the Stanley Co. in Chambersburg and later in the Assembly and Packing departments at Corning Glass Works in Greencastle for 29 years until her retirement in 1989. Verna was a member of Greencastle Church of God. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and traveling, especially to Hawaii and Florida. Verna also loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Cinda R. Fittry (husband Bruce “Ted”) of Greencastle; two grandchildren, Sheena J. Hornbaker (Dane Hoffman) and Keisha L. Hornbaker (Brandon Bradshaw); three great grandchildren, Weston Hoffman, Jackson Hoffman and Drake Bradshaw; and two sisters, Hazel Nelson and Carol Mellott. Aside from her parents and husband, Verna was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Floyd, Wayne and Raymond Dorty; and four sisters, Sylvia Weller McNew, Bernice Bonebrake, Geraldine Zimmerman, and Pauline Berkstresser.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225. Rev. Josh Fowler will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
