Vernia Mae Cox was born on January 15, 1933, to the late Henry and Mattie Cummings in Dothan, Alabama.
Vernia was a hard worker and devoted matriarch of her family. She was warm, caring, and forgiving, always opening her heart, arms, and home to everyone. She loved her family and was loved by many. She entrusted her Lord and let Him lead the way. God has indeed gained an angel who will be missed.
Vernia Mae Cox, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Vernia is reunited in Heaven with her beloved son Willie Charles Shelly; her parents: Henry and Mattie Cummings; five brothers: R.C., Willie E., David L., Wallace and Johnny C. Cummings; six sisters: Claudia Mae Ash, Uretha Cummings Critten, Jerlene Kelly, Audrey Mae Henderson, Mattie J. Chambers and Rebecca Donald.
She leaves behind her loving children two sons: John (Lillian) Shelly, Earl (Mary) Shelly; two daughters: Earnest Parks and Ruby Gifford; twelve grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vernia was blessed to be cherished by her sisters: Bernstein Cummings Thomas, Lena Alford, and Josephine Harris, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, who will carry on and cherish great memories.
