Victor Unger Obituary

Visit the Joseph Levine & Sons Memorial Chapel, Inc. - Trevose website to view the full obituary.

A longtime resident of the Doylestown area, Victor Unger passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025 of natural causes. He died at home with family members by his side. He was 97. Born in New Haven, CT on January 7, 1928, Vic was the son of the late Morris and Pauline Rosenberg Unger.

Victor was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Leah Unger. He will be missed by his son, Fred Unger (Jacqui Ketner) of Providence, RI; his daughters Janet Unger of Leola, PA and Rachel Rando (Robert) of Annandale, NJ and his four grandchildren: Alex, Coby, Emma, and Paul. Vic’s greatest joy was to spend time with his entire family on vacations to Long Beach Island or elsewhere and watching his family grow. He was predeceased by his sister, Ethel Blum and brother, Irving Unger.

After serving with the Army of Occupation in Japan at the end of WW2, Vic graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a major in Chemistry in 1949. He then received his MS degree in Agronomy from the University of Connecticut. With hunger rampant throughout much of the world, Vic idealistically wanted to help provide enough food for everyone. He joined the Research Division of Rohm and Haas Company in 1951 as a laboratory assistant. Following a second MS in statistics at Villanova University, he became the Biometrician in the Agricultural Chemical Research division. Vic co-invented Mancozeb, an important fungicide for use on fruit, vegetables and field crops throughout the world. That product is still a major tool in the fight against plant disease sixty years after the patent was issued. Vic rose through the managerial ranks and, in 1975, became Corporate Director of Agricultural Products Research. In this capacity, he was responsible for the invention and development of all of the company’s agricultural products worldwide. His job involved extensive travel throughout the U.S., Latin America, Europe and Asia. He had the opportunity to hire numerous great scientists, several of whom remained his good friends throughout his life. He retired in 1990 after 39 years with the company.

While living in Buckingham and then Doylestown Borough, Vic enjoyed gardening and walking with friends around Lake Galena and to the coffee shops in town. For many years, he volunteered through Vita Education Services with inmates at the Bucks County Prison, teaching decision-making and job readiness. He considered it a learning experience for him.

Vic will be remembered for his optimism and generous spirit.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 11:30 am at Fox Briar Farm in Lahaska, PA. There will be a luncheon at Fox Briar Farm immediately after the service. Shiva will be observed at the Unger residence in Doylestown following the luncheon and continue on Tuesday, August 5, from 1 to 4 pm. The family would like to thank all of Vic’s caregivers from Believe Home Care for their loving support. We also extend our appreciation to Doylestown Health Hospice for their kind care.

Mourners are encouraged to donate to Bucks County Housing Group’s Doylestown Food Pantry, https://form-renderer-app.donorperfect.io/give/bucks-county-housing-group/in-memory-of-victor-unger or any cause you think befitting of Vic’s memory. No flowers please.
