Virginia Fontes, Age 98, of Mentone, Ca., went to be with Jesus on June 22, 2025.
Virginia was born in Santa Maria, Azores Portugal in October 1926 to Manuel Sousa and Virginia Soares. She was preceded in death by her parents and 5 siblings as well as her husband of 60 years, Antonio, 2 infant children and her son, Manuel. She is survived by her daughter Maria Freitas and son-in-law Antonino. son Antonio (Tony) and daughter-in-law Bella and son John and daughter-in-law Cindy, 9 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren. Virginia was a member of The Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church Community and a member of the Portuguese American Club. Virginia always enjoyed growing things. She had a green thumb and could make any plant survive. For many years she had a garden that was a half an acre. Besides gardening she loved cooking and baking for her family. All special family occasions we were sure to get malasadas, biscoitos, and sweet bread. Every week she baked Portuguese bread and passed out loaves to her children and sometimes to friends. We knew that baking was one of her ways of showing her love for us. We knew the depth of her love because she was always putting the needs of others before hers. She was always very giving of her time. Virginia was very proud of her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and she told them so on many occasions. She showed us all how to deal with life's challenges with grace and patience. She believed that we should accept what is dealt us and go on. She taught by example that being positive and optimistic was important and effective. She held a deep abiding faith in Jesus and the Blessed Mary. She prayed the rosary every day and sometimes more than once a day. She enjoyed life. The simplest things pleased her. Virginia left us with wonderful memories. She will be remembered for her kindness, strength and selflessness. To send flowers to the family of Virginia, please visit our floral store.
