Virginia Rose Alexander Lyon was born December 24, 1935 to Curtis and Anna Mae Bender in
Ridgeway, Missouri. She spent most of her childhood in the Ridgeway and Bethany area. She married Marion Boyd Alexander in 1958, and they traveled across the U.S. for Boyd's work. Two children, Beverly and Barbara, were born during this time. They returned to the Bethany area in 1965 and had two more children, Jerry and Karen.
Virginia wore many hats. She babysat in her home for many years while raising her children. During this time, she also made most of the clothes for her family, dance costumes for her children's friends and outfits for many patrons of The Spinning Wheel, a material store in downtown Bethany. Virginia also helped with the New Hampton 4-H club for many years. She shared her love of sewing with many young ladies throughout the years. Boyd passed in 1984. Virginia later enrolled at Northwest Missouri State College to finish her bachelor's degree in education. She graduated with honors in 1989 and was hired by the South Harrison School District to start the "Parents As Teachers Program" in Harrison County.
Virginia married Rex Lyon, Jr in 1990 and they made their home in New Hampton. Rex preached in the Methodist Church in New Hampton and Virginia helped in the church. She retired from the school system in 2007. After retiring she served on the board of Crestview Nursing Home, worked at the polls during elections, and volunteered at the Harrison County Food Pantry.
Virginia later moved into the Crestview Apartments where she lived for several years before moving to
Atchison, KS. She passed peacefully on October 28, 2025.
