Virginia Lynch Whitten, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, at the remarkable age of 100. She was born on September 8, 1925, in Wayne County, TN, Virginia was the daughter of the late Hardy Burt and Mazy Clay Lynch.
On December 4, 1943, Virginia married Wesley Earl Whitten, a partnership that flourished until his passing on June 25, 2009. Their love story was one marked by devotion and companionship that enriched the lives of all who knew them.
Virginia's journey in life was filled with a spirit of service and dedication. After graduating from Wayne County High School in 1943 as the Salutatorian and then attending business school, she began her career with the Selective Service Board in Waynesboro, TN. Her work then took her to a retail store in Florence, AL, where she touched many lives before taking the helm of Johnson & Whitten Grocery Store in Killen, AL. Later, she found great fulfillment as a librarian at Richards Elementary School in Florence, inspiring countless young minds.
A deeply spiritual woman, Virginia was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church and later attended the First Baptist Church, where she found community and camaraderie.
In her personal life, Virginia was known for her delightful hobby of collecting tea pots and her talent for restoring furniture. But above all, her greatest joy came from the time spent with her family-her true legacy.
She is survived by her son Jerry E. Whitten of Killen, AL; grandchildren, Jennifer Stracener Buchanon (Losson), and Joey Stracener (Jacque); and great grandchild, Nora Stracener.
In addition to her husband and parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her daughter, Vicki Whitten Stracener; brothers, Walter Lynch, Rex Lynch, Roy Lynch, Edward Lynch, Clyde Lynch, Paul Lynch, and Lester Lynch; and sisters, Carrye Moore, Katherine Brewer, and Geneva Ray.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 21, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Saturday, November 22, 2025 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am service time at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Waynesboro, TN.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 11:00 am at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Waynesboro, TN with Joseph Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens in Waynesboro, TN.
