Virginia Lee Winslow

Virginia Lee Forehand Winslow, 90, of Burlington, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025 at Brookdale Assisted Living of Burlington. A native of Norfolk County, Virginia she was born on June 29, 1935 to the late Thurman and Julia Langford Forehand, and she was the wife of the late Robert Morris Winslow. Virginia was a homemaker and a long-time member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Virginia learned to fish while growing up on the Dismal Swamp Canal, where her father and grandfather tended the locks at South Mills, NC. She continued to fish into her 80s. Two of her most exceptional gifts were cooking and sewing. Her Christmas cookies and pound cake were memorable, and she sewed everything from formal dresses to doll clothes and Halloween costumes. She remembered the names of almost everyone she'd ever known, the details of all the best family stories, and every funny thing the grandchildren ever said. A lover of news and follower of politics, she worked in local government, listing property taxes from her base at Elliott's Grocery and serving as registrar of voters and as a poll worker for Patterson Township. She loved dogs, reading, jokes, writing letters, and the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include three daughters-Robin Smith and husband Mike of Chapel Hill, Vicki Winslow and husband Ernesto Serrano of Liberty, and Holli Singleton and husband Bobby of Greensboro-and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jeannine Haskett, and two brothers, Thurman Forehand Jr. and Phillip Forehand.

The family would like to thank her caregivers at Brookdale in Burlington, who treated her with kindness and made her laugh, and the hospice staff at AuthoraCare, who didn't take it personally when Mama gave them the stink-eye for "asking the same questions over and over."

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the family receiving friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
