VJ Thomas

Vijayan John "VJ" Thomas, 71, a resident of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at University Hospital.

VJ was born on March 2, 1954, in Hyderabad, India, the son of Pendlin and Muriel Thomas.

On March 18, 1985, in Hyderabad, he was united in marriage to Saramma "Sara" George and she survives.

VJ was highly sociable, never hesitating to strike up a conversation with anyone within earshot.

He loved spending time outdoors, shooting and fishing for sport in his younger years, going on road trips, dining out with friends and family, barbecuing, and enjoying Sara's home-cooked Indian cuisine. One of his greatest joys was listening to and playing music, filling his space with an affinity for classic rock, gospel, acoustic instrumental, and jazz.

While famously gregarious, VJ also had a pensive side. He spent countless hours reading and researching history, science, and theology, filling journals with meditative and sage poetry. He took pride in his photography skills, always taking the time to capture the beauty of the world around him, and the special moments he shared with his friends and family.

Of all the things he cherished and accomplished throughout his life, his greatest passion was seeking the heart of Jesus Christ. He devoted much of his time to studying the Word, and pursuing a deeper understanding of his faith.

In addition to his wife of over 40 years, VJ will be greatly missed and forever remembered by his two children, Shawn A. Thomas and wife Samantha of Columbia, and Christina P. (Thomas) Melara and husband Luis of Savannah, Georgia; two grandchildren, Miles Thomas and Maeve Thomas; one sister, Geta Thomas of New Zealand; close friend, Marc Galaske; numerous nieces and nephews. While all of his beloved friends and family miss him dearly, they are comforted in the knowledge that Jesus has welcomed him home.

VJ was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shiela Dass.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, at C2 Church, 3300 S. Providence Rd. Columbia, MO 65203, with Pastor Jeremy Risner officiating. The family will receive friends and family from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service; and following the services VJ will be laid to rest in Columbia Cemetery.
