Waldemar "Butch" Burgo of New Bedford Massachusetts died peacefully at the VA Hospital of La Jolla CA on December 20, 2023 at 8:59 pm, surrounded by his daughter Wendy Burgo, and his sister, Alice Fields.
Butch, the son of the late Waldemar G. Burgo and Eva (Pinto) Burgo, lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Butch graduated from New Bedford High School. After graduating, he proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, from December 1964 until October 1969 as a Medical Specialist. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he worked in the aviation field as a senior technician until his retirement from Kirkhill-TA Company in Taunton Massachusetts.
Earlier in life, he coached little league baseball in New Bedford MA for the Verdean Vets baseball team, where his son was also a player. They won the city championship in 1982. He also coached softball for the Buttonwood Café team for many years, where he gained many close friends.
Butch was an avid sports fan and was known to plan his days around Boston Celtics, New England Patriots and Red Sox games.
He later moved to San Diego, CA to be close to his daughter for the remainder of his life.
Survivors include his daughter, Wendy Burgo and her sister, Deborah Sprewell of San Diego CA; his son, Scott Burgo of Dartmouth MA. His grandchildren, Rogelio Pettis, Henry Farve and Koby Jacob; and his great-grandchild, Aaryelle and bonus grandchild Junior from San Diego CA; and many of nieces and nephews.
His sisters, Alice Fields of Chugiak, Alaska, Linda Pinto of N. Dighton, MA, and his brothers, Donald Burgo of San Bernardino, CA, Elario Burgo, Anterio (Terry) Burgo, Marcio Burgo and Maurice Burgo of New Bedford, MA.
His sisters Eleanor Duarte, Eugenia Lomba and Brothers Leonard Burgo, and Lester P. Burgo predeceased him.
His visiting hours will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024 at Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals in New Bedford MA from 10 am to 11 am, his funeral service will be held at 11 am in the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society Organization.
Special thanks to my Aunty Alice for being there through it all from day one! We could not have done it without her hard work, her sleepless nights (or days) and her endless love for her Big Brother Butch! Love you from the bottom of our hearts!!!
