Walter Gerald Brannen passed away on September 26, 2025, at 86.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, his parents Ole Mae Bumpus and Walter Hamilton Brannen, in Georgia.
Walter is survived by his wife Sandra B. Brannen, Fayetteville NC, his children, Jane Brannen, Mary Wardle, Ann (Michael) Waters, John (Lindsey) Brannen and David Brannen, sister, Betsy (Wayne) Griffin, brothers Ray (Joyce) Brannen, and Rocye (Mary Sol) Brannen, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Walter taught a total of 50 years, 34 years at Valdosta State, Ga., moved to NC, remarried and taught at Fayetteville Technical Institute for 16 years. His students thought a lot of him and even in his last days in the hospital, nurses he taught biology at FTCC recognized him and had kind words for him. He became a knife forger in later years and said the goal of a knife smith was to give away 100 knives. He did his best to achieve this goal. He touched the hearts of many and will truly be missed by everyone who met him and got to know him.
A memorial service is being held at Providence Presbyterian Church, 400 Eastwood Avenue, Fayetteville, NC 28301 on November 15, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. The family will be receiving friends following the service in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Providence Presbyterian Church.
