Walter S. Engdahl, a man of gentle spirit, kindness, and remarkable handiness, passed away on November 17, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on December 11, 1935, in South Bend, Indiana, Walter was the cherished son of Earl E. and Norma L. (Bennett) Engdahl.
Walter's early years in South Bend were shared with his brothers, Ernest and Dennis Engdahl, who preceded him in death. It was in
Niles, Michigan, at Trinity Episcopal Church, that Walter joined hands in marriage with his beloved wife, Beverly J. (Webber) Engdahl, on February 23, 1957. Their enduring love became the foundation for a family that grew to include their daughter, Janet Engdahl-Nelson of Niles, and son, Michael Engdahl of Florida. Walter's joy was multiplied with the arrival of three grandchildren, Ryan Morin, Edward Engdahl, and Caylin (Tony) Blando, and the subsequent blessing of two great-grandchildren, Addie and Theo.
For over four decades, Walter was a dedicated employee at the Niles Chemical Plant, where he contributed his skills and work ethic to the betterment of the facility and the community. His professional life was marked by reliability and a commitment to excellence that earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Walter's interests were as varied as they were passionate. An avid fisherman, he spent countless hours by the water's edge, reveling in the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch. His custom fishing rods, crafted with precision and care, were a testament to his skill and creativity. Bowling was another pastime that brought Walter joy and camaraderie. He also found great pleasure in traveling, exploring new places, and creating lasting memories with his family. No matter where his adventures took him, Walter always looked forward to returning home to share meals and laughter with his loved ones.
Those who knew Walter will remember a man who was the epitome of gentleness and kindness. His ability to fix and build, to create with his hands, was matched only by his capacity to mend hearts and nurture spirits. Walter S. Engdahl leaves behind a legacy of love, a blueprint for a life well-lived, and memories that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Memorial contributions may be made in Walter's memory to Heartland Hospice 8075 Creekside Dr # 120, Portage, Michigan 49024 or a
charity of one's choice.
In keeping with his wishes, a private service will be held and he will be laid to rest at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens.
