Walter Sterling Heinzer, 85, of South Plainfield, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on August 24, 2025.
Born on August 20, 1940, in Plainfield, NJ, Walter spent his earlier years in Florida, Watchung and Three Bridges before settling in South Plainfield, where he has resided for the past 35 years.
From 1961 to 1964, Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his service, he dedicated many years to running his family's business, Wally's Tavern in Watchung. He later built a long and successful career as a Sales Representative Manager with Edward Don & Company, where he worked for 28 years until his retirement.
Walter embraced life with enthusiasm and a love for many pursuits. He was an avid golfer, a card player who relished friendly competition, and an active member of an investment club. Known for his quick wit, he could always be counted on to deliver a "dad joke" at just the right moment. A true food enthusiast, Walter was considered the family "food critic," with sushi holding the top spot among his favorites. He also had a passion for travel, especially aboard cruise ships, where he found the perfect blend of culinary delights and adventure.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Janet (Carfaro) Heinzer; his daughters, Robin Heinzer and Kim Sekora (with her husband, Kenny); and his stepchildren, Jennifer Bruno-Dinardi (with her husband, Michael), Sherry Bruno-Zippo (with her husband, Saverio), and Mario Bruno (with his wife, Veronica). Walter is also survived by his grandchildren- Samantha, Jason, Michael, Alexandra, Gavin, Angelo, and Roman- as well as his niece and nephews, Fred Jr., Ricky, Tom, Billy, and Lori.
He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Fred Scharnikow.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a memorial visitation on Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home, 1012 Valley Road, Gillette, NJ.
