Walter Macy Obituary

Walter L. Macy, age 95, of rural Morgantown, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday morning, January 27, 2026.

Walter was born on February 2, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Otis L. and Geraldine (Dickerson) Macy. He attended Southport High School until his junior year, when he was drafted on August 21, 1948, into the United States Air Force. Walter proudly served his country during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged on July 20, 1952.

Walter retired in 1990 as a supervisor from Indianapolis Power & Light after 32 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, he continued to serve his community as a Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy until his retirement in 2012.

Walter was a proud 72-year member and Past Master of the Union Village Masonic Lodge #545, a current officer and 60-year member of the Union Village Eastern Star #584, an active Scottish Rite Shriner, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the American Legion Post #205 in Franklin, and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was also a strong USO supporter.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his love of working on the family farm and his enjoyment of traveling. Walter especially cherished traveling with his wife to Canada, Mexico, and to all 50 states. He was deeply proud of his service in the United States Air Force and was honored to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., where he visited the Korean War Memorial alongside fellow veterans.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death on October 19, 2012, by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Lou (Varner) Macy, whom he married on December 19, 1949, in Friendswood. The couple met during a brief visit home while Walter was serving in the military and stayed in touch throughout his time in Korea by writing letters to one another. Walter often credited his father's advice-"What has been said can never be unsaid"-as the foundation of their long, successful and happy marriage.

Walter was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Frances Hoyt.

He is survived by his son, Steven Macy of Morgantown; his companion, Olga Morgan of Indianapolis; sisters, Mattie Herald of Franklin, Janice (Luke) Campbell of Camby, Vickie (David) Chalfant of Danville; brother, James Macy of Greenwood; and grandchildren, James Macy of Indianapolis and Michael Macy of Corydon as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, February 2nd at Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown with military honors presented at 6:45 p.m. by the United States Air Force and the Franklin Honor Guard. Following military honors, a masonic service will begin at 7:00 p.m. by the Union Village Masonic Lodge.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3rd at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

It was an honor and privilege to know Walter, we were in Eastern Star together at Union. He was always so good to me and welcomed me to that Chapter. His decency and sense of humor will be missed. Sincere condolences to his family
