Obituary published on Legacy.com by Osborn Funeral Home - Shreveport on Jan. 13, 2022.
Walter Malone, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 6, 2022, at St. Joseph's The Carpenter House in Shreveport, LA. He was 84 years old.
Walter was born in Trussville, AL on February 23, 1937, delivered by his grandfather, Dr. E. Y. Malone.
He and his dad moved to Shreveport where he continued his education, graduating from C. E. Byrd in 1955. Walter then went to work for the Big Chain on Fairfield Avenue where he met his "Cookie" when he failed to give her her green stamps! After a twenty-day courtship they married and enjoyed over 50 years together. He went on to work for several bread companies throughout the years, Holsum, Sunbeam and Ideal Baking Companies.
In the early '70's he became interested in woodworking and eventually discovered a love for building unique birdhouses for purple martins. He was even featured in a story in The Shreveport Times and dubbed "the Birdman of Columbia", the street where he lived, having the birdhouses lining the boulevard.
He was an avid sports fan his entire life. His favorite teams the Dallas Cowboys, the New Orleans Saints, the LSU Tigers and golf pro Tiger Woods brought him immense joy over the years!
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Laura Jane, his loving wife, Carolyn(Cookie) and his sister, Pat Muchowski. Surviving him are his children, Monica(Gary) Hicks, Steven(Amy) Malone, Carol(Rick) Casares and Cynthia(Dennis) Guilliams. He was Grandpa to Martha(Chuck) Shirley, Jeff(Tara) Hicks, Brittney Yelverton, Jennifer(fiancé Derek) Scarborough, Laura(fiancé Toby) Robbins, Michael and Scott Malone, and Tiffany(Tyler) Neidecker. Also surviving him is his baby sister, Margaret(Don) Horton, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
His biggest joy in life was being a great grandfather to a dozen! Walter was very proud to be known as "Papalone" to Maddie, Vance, Carly, Maci and Zayne. He was "Papaw" to Donovan. "Flower" was the name that Piper, Savannah and Harley chose to call him. And Londyn, Lawrence and Ruby knew him as "Grandpa".
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022, at Osborn Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m., followed by the service at 6 p.m. Brother Monroe Mercer of Greenacres Baptist Church will officiate. The family would love for you to come dressed casually and wearing your favorite sports apparel. A private burial will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
Walter's great grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ochsner's, the Heritage Manor Bossier Therapy Department and Willis Knighton Bossier for their care during this difficult time. And a special thank you to Diana and The Carpenter House staff for providing the best care and compassion in such a short time. You truly made our Dad's departure easier to bear!
