Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 11, 2025 at Homestead Cemetery, Homestead, OK for Walter Powell, Jr., 91, of Wichita, Kansas. Mr. Powell passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at his home in Wichita. He was born June 25, 1934 at Canton, Oklahoma to Walter Sr. and Velma (Martin) Powell.

Walt was raised and attended school at Canton, Oklahoma. He was a combat veteran that served in both the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps. where he received a Purple Heart and several other commendations before being honorably discharged in 1955.

Walt was a freemason and an active Shriner and enjoyed driving children and their families to the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. He drove his tin lizzy in many parades. Walt was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents and brother Glenn Powell; Survivors include his daughter Debra Olson (Steve Ream) of Wichita, KS and son Richard J. Essex (Diana) of Magnolia, TX; two brothers, G.R. Powell and Larry Joe Powell both of Texas; grandchildren Joshua Powell of Kansas City, KS, Joseph DeMoura of Miami, OK and Brandon Rucker of Wichita, KS; great-grandchildren Baliegh and Faithe DeMoura. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospital with the funeral home serving as custodian at P.O. Box 36, Canton, OK 73724.
