Walter Scott Obituary

In Loving Memory of Walter M. Scott, Sr. ("Mike")

Walter M. Scott, Sr., known to friends and family as "Mike," passed away peacefully on Sunday June 15th, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, determination, and warmth. A beloved father, grandfather, veteran, entrepreneur, and friend, Mike's life was marked by passion, purpose, and love for those around him.

Born in Shelbyville, IN on April 29th, 1949, he is survived by his two sons, Jason (wife Heather) and Mike Jr. (wife Lisa), and his treasured grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, and Daylan, and his companion Kay Herrmann. Mike is also survived by his bothers Gerry, Gregg and Brian and sister, Donna. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jill, with whom he shared 50 years of love and partnership.

Mike proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, embodying honor and commitment throughout his life. He went on to become a successful entrepreneur, founding Financial Management Solutions, Inc. (FMSI), a bank consulting firm. Through vision and hard work, he grew FMSI into a respected leader in the industry before selling the company and retiring in 2018.

In retirement, Mike fully embraced his passions. He found joy in gardening, especially nurturing Hostas and Day Lilies, and was an active member of the Magnolia Garden Club and the American Hosta Society. He loved to travel and had a knack for creating beautiful new homes wherever life took him.

Mike was also a lifelong archer and competitor, a member of the Kennesaw Archery Club (GA) and the Lee County Archers (FL), and a proud lifetime member of the National Field Archery Association, Inc. The friendships and community he found in the archery world were a great source of pride and happiness.

A man of deep faith, Mike was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Cartersville, Georgia, where he found spiritual strength and a welcoming church family.

Mike will be remembered for his generosity, his unwavering love for family, and his zest for life. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church (814 West Avenue, Cartersville, GA 30120) at 11:00 a.m., with the family receiving visitors beginning at 10:00 a.m.

My husband and I met Mike when he purchased a home in the beautiful "Encore" community. We both have a passion for plants. Hostas are one variety that we are both fond of. When he moved in he brought a collection of beautiful varieties. We had chats about the care of them. Always smiling, he was willing to share his knowledge and literature. I´ll never forget his kindness.
Mike is in the loving arms now of our Father. No more pain, tears or sorrows. May he rest in peace!
Blessings to his family and friends. Dorothy Aiken

My sincere condolences to Mikes family and friends. I met Mike in 1994 in Ellijay, Ga at a weekly meeting we both attended. We remained friends throughout the years. Mike´s compassion toward me and his ability to look beyond mine and others flaws made Mike a true cherished friend. He helped me in a dark time and that is something I will never forget. Earth´s loss is Heaven´s gain!

Mike was my dear friend and I think of him often , His knowing gaze when times were tough for me inspired me to be better in every aspect of my life . I met Mr. Scott and instantly bound in service to him . I was just getting started as a barber in Blue Ridge , Ga . It was almost 20 yrs ago and we were coming off a economic crash centering around a failing housing market . I had worked in construction for many years and made a decent living . I had recently gotten married when the recession hit and was forced to try something , anything new to provide income for my new family . Having little education I decided to try service as a barber due to reading an article on the depression and careers that thrived in that time . I am 6"2 225lbs and only had experience using my natural braun to make my way in life . Mike was one of my first customers He came in early on a Saturday and allowed the new guy to give it a go as He put it . I did my best , He wasnt satisfied , the following week , same effort , same result . Finally the third week I lay awake on Friday night in dread knowing He would be there and knowing I would most likely fail something seemingly insignificant made me question my decision and quite frankly my ability to provide for myself and new wife . True to form Mike was there his usual stoic self and again He got into my chair and allowed me another go of it . When I turned him towards the mirror I was shocked to see He was actually pleased and thanked me for my determination to get it right and not giving up . He had that way about him didn't he , it seemed like every mundane event He somehow taught a life lesson ending with sly grin whenever I caught onto the ruse . From that day forward I was blessed to get to spend 20-30 minutes with him every Saturday morning , it came to be the highlight of my week . He was my friend . He understood my struggles despite such different backgrounds we laughed together and in private cried together . He was there through my two children's birth , I was there when sickness struck his loved ones , we loved one another through it all . Eventually I came to by a caretaker of sorts of his " little house in the mountains " . He watched me via camera toiling late into the night doing various jobs for him that others had told him were not possible , He seemed truly awed by the amount of effort I was willing to put in to accomplish his request , He had started his " Moments with Mike " blog about this time and I felt it was meant just for me to keep me inspired , the man meant more to me than anyone will ever know , His love for Jill was like nothing I have seen before or since , I tried to emulate him in every way . Mike had more of an impact on me than I realized until this very moment . He will be sorely missed .

My condolences to Mike´s family and friends. My prayers are with you all.
I met Mike for the first time in 1992 as FMSI was just starting out and worked for the firm for a short time. Mike and I reconnected in 1994 when I was working for a software company in East Bay San Francisco, CA. He was attending a trade show the firm I was working at sponsored. We agreed to stay in contact and we did. I rejoined FMSI in 2002 as its CFO. It was my admiration for Mike and the friendship we developed over the years that drew me back to FMSI. Mike was a great boss and I learned a great deal from him. One of the things I most admired was Mike´s commitment to make the right decisions for the business to ensure it thrived and his staff could feel secure he had the company´s and their well being in mind with each decision he made. I will miss him a great deal. He was a dear friend.

Mike was my friend, I will miss him. Our family of three sons and Mike and Jill´s family of two sons became best of friends about 45 years ago through Mike´s and my interest in running. We were both very competitive in anything we did. I should have told him when I visited a few days before he passed that, though I am older, he even had to get to Heaven first!
When Mike used his brilliant mind to start his bank consulting firm he wanted it to be the very best consulting firm and he accomplished that goal.
We will always treasure the times we spent with Mike and Jill and their boys...fun
times and great memories. Many hugs, thoughts and prayers for Walt and Jason and their families.
Love,
Bill and Sue Garren

Thoughts and prayers for this family. I knew Mike because I am also a member of Magnolia Garden Club. It was always a joy to see him each month, our male member! Fun for us, and brave of him!! We were so happy and pleased to have his beautiful home on our garden tour. We have missed him for awhile, however, I know he was getting wonderful care, and now his Lord has taken over. With love, Susan Wilson

Mike was a devoted member of our church, Trinity United Methodist, and very soon became a dear friend to me. He even ordered a very special toy truck for my grandson who attends church with me. His generosity knew no limits and his graciousness, no bounds. I will miss his sweet smile and gentle hugs each Sunday. I´m glad I got to know such a fine gentleman.
