Walter "Walt" Thomas Tillery, age 88, entered peacefully into eternal rest at his home on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
He was a native of Greensburg, Louisiana and a resident of Marrero, Louisiana.
Walter was a Veteran of the United States Navy.
He was a 1954 graduate of St. Helena High School in Greensburg, Louisiana. He also attended Southern University- Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Delgado College, Southeastern University, Donaldson Real Estate School, and New Orleans Baptist Seminary (Studied the Book of Job).
Walter was employed and retired from Union Carbide Chemical Plant Corporation.
He was the first black Water Meter Reader in Jefferson Parish; he served on Jefferson Parish Housing Authority Board and Jefferson Parish and RTA Transportation Board.
Walter was also a devoted Deacon at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, in Marrero, Louisiana. He served on various Ministries–Adult Sunday School, New Members, Senior Stars, Vacation Bible School/Camp Staff and Safety, Feed Ministry, and Norwegian/New Orleans Culture Mix.
He was a member of the Pride of Gretna, Chapter No. 60 Order of Eastern Star and Oscar James Dunn, Lodge No. 85 Mason.
Walter was devoted to his family and will be remembered for his giving heart, nurturing spirit, loving attitude, and a praying warrior. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that will continue to inspire all who loved him.
Walter leaves to cherish his memory, his four children, to whom he was devoted–Lisa Tillery Browning, Gwendolyn (BeLawrence) Bethly, Houston, TX, JD (Renee) Williams, Carrollton, TX, and Arthurine Coleman; brother–Clovis (Ora Mae) Tillery; sister–Bettye Tillery Cleveland; sister-in-law–Hazel Delk Tillery and Eula Johnson; son-in-law–Larry Daniels; godchild–KaiVal Howard; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife–Beaulah Mae Tillery; parents–Walter and Annie Mae Tillery; parents-in-law–Ernest Dugar, Hazel Dugar Mitchell, and Alvin Mitchell; daughters–Joan Marie Lee and Joyce Daniels; brothers–Alton Tillery and Leo Rogers (Barbara) Tillery Sr.; sister–Rose Marie Hawthorne; son-in-law–Jesse Browning; brothers-in-law–James Hawthorne, Errol Dugar, Ernest Dugar, Samuel Dugar, and Edward (Eula) Johnson; and sister-in-law–Vera Washington; and grandson–Kenneth Buckner.
Special thanks to Camershia Williams, Arthurine Coleman, Dr. Shaunda Jones, Dr. Leonard Glade, Dr. Louis Glade, West Jefferson Hospital, University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO) Clinical Education and Professional Development Department, Passages Hospice, other family and friends ensuring "Daddy" was taken care of and support. Thanks to all of you for the prayers, calls, cards and flowers.
Walter will be deeply missed by all.
Relatives; family; friends; employees of Union Carbide/Dow Chemical Corporation, ReMax Realty, RTA, LCMC Health- West Jefferson Hospital/Touro Hospital/University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO); Pastors and members of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church and surrounding churches; and employees of Jefferson Parish Transportation, RTA and Jefferson Parish Housing Authority, are invited to attend the Homegoing Celebration on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, 1000 Walkertown Way, Marrero, LA 70072.
Pastor T.J. Brown Jr. will officiate.
The Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 9:45 AM.
The Masonic Mason and Eastern Star Tribute will be from 9:00 AM until 9:30 AM.
Pastor Thomas J. Brown Jr. will officiate.
The Interment will follow at Restlawn Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, 3450 US – 90 W, Avondale, LA 70094.
Professional Arrangements are entrusted to Murray Henderson Funeral Home, 1209 Teche Street, New Orleans, LA 70114.

Thank you for all of the conversations about the Butler family. You were the first grandchild of Alec Butler, then we came along. Aunt Annie Mae, Alton, Roger, Rose, are awaiting your spirit. You carried our tradition like no other. You have gone ahead to light the way for me and others. Rest good, have fun in the spiritual world. We will always love you.
