Walter L. Wood, Jr., 87, passed away Monday morning, July 7th, at home.
He was born July 2, 1938 in Alexandria Bay, son of Walter L. Wood, Sr. and Isobell D. Henderson Wood.
Walt graduated from Alexandria Central High School in 1956 and attended Oswego State College.
He proudly served in the US Navy from 1957-1959, doing a Mediterranean tour aboard the U.S.S. Des Moines (CA-134).
Marriages to Darryl J. Lindsey and Melody J. Cunningham both ended in divorce, although they remained close.
Walt worked for many years as a fuel delivery driver for Leo Pharoah from the 1960’s. He made sure people were warm in the winter and could fuel their boats in the summer and retired almost 50 years later from James B. Vock, Inc., Theresa, NY.
He served as Past Commander and Color Guard Member for the John B. Lyman American Legion Post 904. He was a long-standing Member of the Alexandria Bay-Theresa Golf League, and served as a Color Guard Member in the Original Yanks Drum and Bugle Corps, Antwerp NY.
He had a love for fishing, especially bullheads, in the creeks around Alexandria Bay. As an official member of the Alcid Garage Group, he would often tell stories of his adventures in and around the Village of Alexandria Bay. His quick wit and knowledge of the area would entertain his family and friends for hours as his memory never faded. Walter was especially fond of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and in his own way would show you how much they were appreciated and how fond he was of them.
He is survived by three sons, Jeff (Mary), Watertown, Steve (Heather), Watertown and Matthew (Jes), Himrod, NY, two daughters, Janet Wood, Alexandria Bay and Brandy (Billy) Beach, Watertown, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. A graveside ceremony will be held at a later date.
