Wanda Harris was born in 1938, the oldest of 7 children, to William and Marvell Mays. She grew up and graduated from Los Banos High School, CA, in 1957. Wanda spent 30 years of her adult life in Stanton, California where she raised her
children and then eventually moved to
Fullerton, CA. In 2015, she moved to
Boerne, Texas, to live closer to her daughter's family.
Wanda worked many years for the Hunt-Wesson Food Company in
Fullerton, CA where she worked as a lab microscopy analyst. She became a trainer and was very active in the union by becoming an employee representative. When the company
moved the plant out of state, Wanda took over operating and managing the company store which they maintained locally for employees. Wanda ran a tight ship, took pride in her organizational and bookkeeping skills and loved helping and talking to all her fellow employees daily.
In her spare time, and during retirement, Wanda stayed active in knitting and crocheting groups. She knitted scarf and hat sets for years and donated them all to cancer centers for patients who lost their hair during treatments. She loved knitting her scarves so much, each friend and family member would receive several in different colors chosen specifically for them throughout the years. Wanda was \an avid reader keeping a novel in many rooms throughout the house and would be
reading them all at the same time. It was amazing that she could keep all the story lines straight. She was also a "collector" of many beautiful things and antiques including anything from her hometown of Los Banos, Fenton glassware, Precious Moments figurines and Annalee dolls. The hunt to complete collections was a major joy in Wanda's life, continually searching antique malls, garage sales and flea markets. Wanda would search for items for loved ones' collections and end up \collecting them herself in the process. Nothing made her happier than gifting items to family and friends which always came with a story as to how she found the item and why she felt it was the perfect gift for them.
Wanda also loved to travel, taking several trips throughout the United States and Mexico with friends and family. She often spoke of those trips, how much they meant to her and the memories that were made. Wanda's biggest joy in life was her family. Spending time with and caring for her grandchildren was a top priority. She sewed costumes for school plays, attended
all their concerts and never missed a sporting event where one of her grandchildren was playing. One could not ask for a more caring and compassionate cheerleader than Wanda. She loved her grandkids so much.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, William and Marvell Mays, her brothers Robert and Harvey Mays and her sisters Jounette Mays, Jeanette Melton, and Sharon Mays. She is survived by her children Bonnie Clanin (Scot), Randall Harris (Kelly), sister Jill Martin (Duane), grandchildren Jolene Fleming (Ryan), Jennifer Lewis (Trey), Justine Rubin (Pierce) and Tyler Clanin, 6 great grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She will forever be in our hearts.
