Wayland D. Harris, 85, of Piedmont, MO, passed away Monday, October 6, 2025, at his residence. He was born in Poplar Bluff, MO, March 14, 1940, to parents William N. and Betty Ann (Berryman) Harris.
Wayland was a loving brother, cousin, and loyal friend. He grew up with a deep appreciation for learning, history, and community-a spirit that remained with him throughout his life. A 1958 graduate of Germantown High School in TN, Wayland went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962. After his military service, he continued his education and earned his four-year degree from Memphis State University.
Wayland built a fulfilling career as a service representative with the Social Security Administration in St. Louis, where he worked diligently to assist others with care and professionalism.
A man of many passions, Wayland was an avid chess player who loved the intellectual challenge of the game. His curiosity extended beyond the chessboard-he had a lifelong love of history and was deeply involved with the Wayne County Historical Society, where he volunteered his time and enthusiasm for preserving local heritage. He was proud to be a lifetime member of the organization.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Judy Mahal.
Wayland is survived by his brother-in-law, Keith Mahal; cousins: Joe Berryman of Sun City, AZ, Jim Berryman of Cape Girardeau, and Jerry Berryman of Jackson, TN; as well as many dear friends and members of the Piedmont community who will miss him greatly.
Wayland's warmth, intelligence, and dedication to others will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him.
Visitation was held at 11:00 am, Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont Chapel. Funeral service followed at 1:00 pm, also in the Piedmont Chapel. Pastor Richard Sanders ministered to the family. Keith Mahal, Brian Polk, Gary Beiseman, Gary Umfleet, Jeff Radford, Jerry Berryman, John Carter, and Jason Carter served as pallbearers. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Army and American Legion Post 281 of Piedmont. Online condolences can be made at www.rueggfuneralhomes.com
