Wayne Hudson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A. on Jan. 5, 2024.

Wayne Paul Hudson passed away on January 4, 2024, surrounded by the comfort and love of his family at Hospice of the Chesapeake after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. The long-time resident of Pasadena, Maryland was 80 years old. Wayne was born in Baltimore and attended Saint Mary’s High School in Annapolis. After attending the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, he decided to make music his life-long profession.

In the 1960s and 70s, Wayne toured the world as drummer for headliners such as Chubby Checker, Joni James, Frankie Avalon, and Al Martino, playing shows in England, Japan, Germany, and Australia to name a few. Closer to home, Wayne was drummer and later frontman and singer for the Zim Zemarel Orchestra, entertaining audiences along the East Coast with Big Band and Swing music from another era. Wayne was also an accomplished guitarist and pianist and would occasionally play the washboard as a one-man band under the alias “Washboard Willie” to the delight of his audiences.

In 1975, Wayne joined the faculty of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland where he spent 38 years as the school’s Percussion Specialist, teaching all types of percussion instruments to generations of students. He retired from McDonogh in 2013.

To the end, Wayne was an avid sportsman who loved baseball, hunting, fishing, and golf. For the last 18 years, Wayne was a member of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), participating in and winning numerous cowboy action shooting competitions under the alias, “Wichita Wayne”. The friendships he made on his many trips to shooting events across the country were a source of great joy to him.

Wayne’s love for music was only surpassed by his love for his family. Wayne was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years Barbara, and his parents Samuel and Dorothy Hudson. He is survived by his wife of 20 years Jean Hudson (nee Kozoidek) at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, MD; his children, Sharon Grant of Greenville, SC, Wendy McCloskey of Millersville, MD, Denise Potter of Millersville, MD, and Wayne Hudson II of Havre de Grace, MD; his sister Carol Wagner of Ferndale, MD; his 11 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, PA, 1 2nd Avenue, S.W. (at Crain Highway), Glen Burnie, MD 21061 on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 10:00 am. Committal Service and Interment to follow at the Maryland National Cemetery, 13300 Baltimore Ave, Laurel, MD 20707.
