Wayne Luthringshausen Obituary

Wayne Luthringshausen, age 77, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, died due to complications from cancer on August 9, 2021, in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

He was the son of the late Raymond Luthringshausen and Helen Plique Luthringshausen, brother of the late Gayle Luthringshausen and David Luthringshausen, beloved husband of 58 years to Karen Parr Luthringshausen, father to Kevin (Jackie), Kelly (Michelle), and Kristin Luthringshausen, and grandfather to Kole, Lauren, Chloe, Hudson, Erik, Beck, Lucie, Anders, and Thibault.

Wayne was a graduate of St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Loyola University of Chicago, and later completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Wayne is widely regarded as one of the founders of the U.S. listed options market. In 1963, he began his career in the securities and futures industry in New Orleans, first with Kohlmeyer & Company and then with Viguerie, Hayne & Chaffe. In 1970, Wayne joined the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) to assume an active role in the development of the first central marketplace for the trading of listed options contracts - the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).

Wayne led the project to launch the Chicago Board Options Exchange Clearing Corporation (CBOECC) and was appointed its President and CEO in 1973. Shortly thereafter, Wayne was instrumental in restructuring the CBOECC to create a clearinghouse for the entire U.S. listed options market, and the CBOECC became known as the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC). Wayne led OCC as Chairman and CEO with a steadfast hand for forty years, until his retirement in 2013.

During his distinguished career leading OCC, Wayne was key to the overall growth of the options market. He was a visionary who implemented many new initiatives to make the options clearing process more efficient and effective. In 1992, he created the Options Industry Council to help educate investors about the benefits and risks of using options products. In 2002, in recognition for his contributions to the options industry, Wayne was the first ever recipient of the Options Industry Appreciation Award, which was later renamed the Joseph W. Sullivan Options Industry Achievement Award.

Wayne was a great mentor to multitudes of individuals within the options industry and in his community, and left an extraordinary legacy. He was elected a member of the Futures Industry Hall of Fame, was a principal in the creation of the Multinet Bank (later renamed the Continuous Linked Settlement System), was a recipient of the Anti-Defamation League's Lifetime Achievement Award, was named a Chicago Boy Scouts of America Scout of the Year, served on the St. Patrick High School Board of Trustees and Finance Committee, was the recipient of the St. Patrick High School Silver Cross Award, and served numerous years as a coach of youth football and baseball in the Buffalo Grove youth sports programs. For many years, Wayne also held the record for the longest punt in Soldier Field, which he kicked while playing on his St. Patrick High School football team.

While Wayne's impact on the financial industry and in the community is remarkable, if you had asked Wayne what his greatest achievement was he would have said his family, to whom he was the world's greatest husband, father, and grandfather. He was his grandchildren's greatest coach, biggest fan, favorite golf partner, first go-to for advice, best friend, and all-around hero.

All services for Wayne will be held on August 20, 2021. Visitation will take place at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, from 9:30 - 11:30 AM. Funeral Mass will begin at 12:30 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, followed by a private family burial at St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org).

The CBOE will honor Wayne with a one-minute moment of silence before the opening bell on Monday, August 16th at 8:20 AM CT.

WE THINK OF WAYNE OFTEN AND WE THINK OF HIM IN SO MANY DIMENSIONS. AS A LEADER IN THE OPTIONS INDUSTRY, INDEED AS ONE OF ITS FOUNDERS. AS A VISIONARY AT OCC. BUT MOST OF ALL WE LIKE TO THINK ABOUT HIM AS A FRIEND. WE SHARED SO MANY GREAT AND FUN TIMES TOGETHER. AT WINTER BOARD MEETINGS, AT "BD" TRIPS WITH THE HENDERS, AND RAYBERTS AND AT THE EGA OUTINGS IN HILTON HEAD.
THE EGA (EXECUTIVE GOLF ADDICTS) MANY OF THE OPTION INDUSTRY LEADERS GATHERING
TOGETHER FOR GOLF, CAMARADERERIE, A LITTLE POKER AND MANY, MANY LAUGHS. ON ALL OF US.
AND ON SOME OCCASSIONS WE HOSTED WAYNE, HIS SONS, AND HIS FRIENDS FOR GOLF AT MERION, AIRONOMINK, ATLANTIC CITY CC, AND GALLOWAY.
AND SOMETIMES ENDING UP IN AYLANTIC CITY.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU WAYNE AND WE LOVE YOU KAREN.

Your assistant in your years before your retirement from OCC. Things were never the same when you left. But happy you were able to retire. Missed you!

Dear Kevin, Jackie, Kole, Chloe, and the entire Luthringshausen family,
We send our deepest sympathy, many thoughts and prayers to each of you at this sad time. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend to so many. St. Patrick High School was blessed to have him on the football team and Board of Trustees. May the many fond memories of all of the special days spent with him ease the pain of his passing and comfort you. May God's choicest blessings be yours.
Hugs and love,
Wally & Pam Wilk
