Wayne Morris Shields, affectionately known as “Nick,” was born on July 9, 1939, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he lived throughout his life. He was the son of Theodore Shields and Betty J. Shields (née Derrick). Nick was a proud graduate of Central Dauphin High School, a veteran of the United States Air Force, and a dedicated retiree of Pennsylvania Power & Light Company.

Nick’s presence brought comfort and joy to those around him. He was known for his warm smile, steady kindness, and the laughter he shared so freely—whether with family, friends, neighbors, or someone he had only just met.

Nick’s faith and church family were a meaningful part of his life. He was a longtime member of Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served with joy as a member of the Meet & Greet Ministry, welcoming others with the same warmth and friendliness he was known for everywhere he went.

Outside of work and community service, Nick found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman and a longtime Dallas Cowboys fan—interests that brought him peace, excitement, and many memorable conversations over the years.

A significant part of Nick’s life was spent supporting young people and serving the community through track and field. He was widely respected as a longtime official, serving as a Central Penn and PIAA track and field official, and he gave his time and talent as a coach at the Milton Hershey School, Bishop McDevitt High School, and Central Dauphin East High School. His dedication reflected his belief in discipline, teamwork, and helping others reach their potential.

Nick was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Shields (and Ronald’s wife, Doris), and his sister, Joan Stolard (née Shields). He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Michele Shields (née Jones); his brother, Victor Shields (and Victor’s wife, LaVunda); his son, Reggie Barton (and Reggie’s wife, Terry); his son, Derrick Shields (and Derrick’s wife, Rene) and his stepdaughter, Tiffany Guthrie. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will continue to carry his memory forward.

Nick’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched—through his family, through the countless athletes and students he encouraged, through his church community, and through the many friendships he built over a lifetime. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
