Wayne William Wagner, a beloved father, brother, grandfather and friend, passed away at home on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at age 78. Born on March 26, 1947 in Portland, Maine, to the late Nelson Eugene and Irene Jeanette Wagner.
Wayne grew up in Gorham, ME and was the eldest son to the family that ran Wagner Strawberry Farm.
Wayne graduated from Gorham High School. He went on to earn an associate's in electrical engineering from University of Maine, and a bachelor's in operations management and master's in business administration from University of New Haven. Wayne was deeply proud of his service in the U.S. Army. He often shared stories of his time at basic training in Fort Benning, GA and his time stationed in Europe as a communications specialist. Those years expanded his world beyond his hometown and remained some of his fondest memories.
After the military, Wayne went into business, a field where his brilliance shone. A trained engineer with a mind for mathematics and strategy, he transformed healthcare organizations by using data to merge hospitals and architect information systems.
But Wayne was more than just an intellectual-he was a master craftsman and a self-taught handyman, capable of fixing, building, and improving nearly anything. He was also an avid gardener, often spending countless hours tending to his yard. In the winter months, you could find him skiing in Killington, VT, alongside friends who had become like family to him. In the recent months he relocated to Georgia and enjoyed doting on his beloved granddaughter, Reagan.
Wayne was preceded by his brother Richard. He survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Wagner of Burlington, VT, and Morissa Szmyt and her husband Derek of Peachtree Corners, GA; his brothers Timothy and wife Carol, and Michael; his sister Coleen Plummer and her husband William; the mothers of his children Ellen Carlyon and Laura Wagner; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Wayne will be buried in the presence of family and friends on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 16 in Killington, VT.

I am grateful to have seen and spoken Wayne often the last few years while living in Avon. Admired his beautiful garden regularly and enjoyed talks with this very peaceful man and his future plans in retirement. May we all meet again !! Ellen C.
