Wendall Lee Hemphill, born on June 12, 1961, in Cortez, Colorado, passed away peacefully on August 19 2024, in Montrose, Colorado, surrounded by his beloved family. He leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy built on hard work, love, and a devotion to his family and community.
A proud graduate of Dolores High School in 1980, Wendall continued his education at San Juan Vocational Technical School, where he earned a welding certification and later a mechanics certification. This foundation allowed him to excel in his automotive repair career and offered him the skills to assist others in their needs.
Wendall was a dedicated professional who spent several years working for the Colorado Department of Transportation. His passion for mechanics led him to own his own shop, where he shared his talent and expertise with many. Recently, Wendall obtained his Federal Firearms License (FFL), which allowed him to engage in buying and selling firearms and ammunition, reflecting his lifelong enthusiasm for firearms and hunting.
Wendall cherished the time spent with his family, often reminiscing about the fishing trips taken together at Miramonte. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and took great joy in these outdoor activities, sharing them with his loved ones. His adventurous spirit and love for nature were complemented by his ability to offer help when it mattered most, by volunteering as an ambulance driver which led to him saving a woman's life by applying a hands-on tourniquet until she could receive medical attention.
Wendall is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn Hemphill, and their sons, Josh Hemphill and Austin Hemphill and his wife Tashawna. He was a proud grandfather (Pepaw) to Ayla Hemphill, as well as Johnny Hemphill. Wendall is also remembered fondly by his brothers, Jamie Hemphill and his wife Shanna, Scott Hemphill and his wife Melony, and Jared Hemphill and his wife Julie.
Wendall is preceded in death by his parents, Winnie and Johnny Hemphill, who undoubtedly welcomed him into eternal rest.
To honor Wendall's life, a graveside service will be held on August 23, 2024, at Dove Creek Cemetery, located at 500 4th St, Dove Creek, Colorado, 81324. The service will begin at 11:00 AM and reception to follow at the Dove Creek Community Center.
