Wendell Powell Hoyle, 96, passed away on October 10th, 2025 surrounded by loved ones in his long time family home in Greenville, Mississippi.
Services will be held on October 14th, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. Internment will be at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens immediately following funeral services.
Wendell was born in 1929 in Gulfport, Mississippi. After graduating from Gulfport High School in 1947, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Medical Corpsman, proudly serving his country from 1948-1952. While serving, he fought abroad in the Korean War. After completing his military duties, he went on to enroll at the University of Mississippi, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry in 1955. Wendell would tell you that his single greatest accomplishment at Ole Miss wasn't actually getting his degree, but meeting his beloved wife, the late Betty Sue Hough Hoyle, whom he was happily married to for sixty-four years.
Wendell and Betty Sue lived in Greenville for over fifty years. While in Greenville, Wendell was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was ordained Deacon in 1967; and the Greenville Kiwanis Club. He also wore many other hats, such as serving the Boy Scouts of Greenville in various capacities, teaching Sunday School, tutoring the underprivileged and even serving on the state board for the Ole Miss Alumni Association and as Vice-President and President of the Mississippi Square and Round Dance Association.
A true southern gentleman. To know him was to absolutely love and respect him.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Hough Hoyle, Donna Sue Fellows (daughter), David Hoyle and Jimmy Hoyle (brothers) and Gladys Bellamy (sister). He is survived by his daughter, Celeste Hoyle DeAngelo (Ricky), as well as seven grandchildren, J.D. Fellows, Nathan Fellows, Angel Reed (Jake), Kristen Swafford (Hunter), Olivia Bradberry (Jason), Carter DeAngelo (Lucy) and Jacqueline Fellows, as well as thirteen great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jake Reed, Jason Bradberry, Matthew Mosow, Gregory Bernardi, Hunter Swafford and Fred Nichols. Honorary pallbearers are Carter DeAngelo, J.D. Fellows and Nathan Fellows.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church Friends of Music Program.
