Wendi Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Merle Hay Funeral Home on Mar. 13, 2026.
With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we celebrate the life and spirit of Wendi Julene Smith, who passed away on August 26th, 2025, at the age of 57. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, September 4 th from 4 – 7 pm at the Merle Hay Funeral Home Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Rd in Des Moines.

Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Wendi attended Southeast Polk High School and built a long, respected career as a gas serviceman with Mid American Energy.

She was known for her exceptional work ethic, but also for her warmth, quick wit, and the kindness she extended to everyone- human and animal alike. She never knew a stranger, and her welcoming presence made people feel instantly at ease.

Wendi had a heart full of adventure and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world.

Most recently, she fulfilled a dream by taking an Alaskan cruise, which she described as "like a movie" and "most magical experience" of her life. Whether traveling, gardening, golfing, decorating, or feeding her beloved backyard squirrels, Wendi brought joy and care to everything she did.

She was funny, compassionate, and endlessly giving. Her family was the center of her world, and she treasured every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. Her presence was the kind that made holidays brighter, conversations warmer, and ordinary days feel special.

Wendi was a beloved mother, devoted daughter, loving sister, loyal partner, and a true friend. Her legacy is one of laughter, love, and a life lived with open arms.

She will be missed more deeply than words can express, but her spirit will remain alive in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.

Wendi is survived by her companion, Steve Smitherman, two daughters, Megan Parrott & Maddison Smith, grandchildren, Nysia Parrott & Jarvis Jones, her parents, Jim & Ardis Sullivan, brother Tony Sullivan, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Todd Kritenbrink.

Memorials may be directed to the family to support causes important to Wendi.
