W. King Smith, known affectionately as King, was a beacon of light and love in the lives of all who knew him. Born on September 17, 1941, in
Baltimore, MD, King was called to his eternal rest on December 3, 2025, in
Bel Air, MD. His passing was due to heart failure, yet his enduring spirit and the legacy of his generous heart will forever be cherished by his family, his friends, and the countless lives he touched.
King is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce Smith, who stood by his side in love and partnership throughout their 58 years together. His legacy of love continues through his daughter Dana Thomas; his grandchildren, Samantha Duke and Trevor and CJ Spidell; and his great-granddaughter, Riley Childers, whom he adored. King's loving family also includes his daughter Carla Naydan, her husband Brendan, and their children, Cicada and Allison Naydan. Each family member was a cherished jewel in King's crown of life, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and joys.
Education was a cornerstone of King's life, evidenced by his impressive academic achievements. After attending Western Maryland College, he pursued a passion for healing and service, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from USMOD in 1965. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1967 and further honed his expertise with a fellowship in medical genetics and a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery-didactic at the esteemed Johns Hopkins Hospital and UMSOD, respectively, in 1969. King's commitment to education was lifelong, as he imparted his wisdom to students as an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins Medicine for 40 years and taught at UMSOD in Perryville, MD, from 2013 to 2019.
King's professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. He operated a successful oral surgery practice in
Bel Air, MD, for over five decades, where he served the community with unmatched skill and compassion. His influence extended beyond his practice as he served on the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners from 2000 to 2008, including a term as president in 2004. His contributions to the field of oral surgery and his unwavering commitment to his patients exemplified his selfless nature.
A man of deep Christian faith, King lived his beliefs through his actions. He was a pillar in his community, not only as a healthcare provider but also as a living example of Christian virtues. Generous, selfless, and loving-these words encapsulate the essence of King's character. He gave freely of himself to all, whether through his professional expertise or the simple, yet profound, acts of kindness he showed to everyone he encountered.
King's interests were deeply rooted in his love for his family and his dedication to serving others. He believed in the power of community and the importance of giving back, particularly through his work in oral surgery and research in the field. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the lives of many and have advanced the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery for future generations.
As we remember W. King Smith, let us celebrate a life well-lived-a life that exemplified the greatest commandments to love God and love one another. King's journey on earth has ended, but his spirit remains a guiding light for all who were blessed to know him. Though we mourn his departure, we rejoice in the knowledge that he has entered into the glory of God's kingdom, where he will dwell in peace and joy everlasting.
Memorial contributions in King's name may be made to the James L. Ditto Scholarship Program at Fallston United Church.
