We are saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Wiley E. Koon, beloved husband and father, on Monday, May 6, 2024.
Wiley was born in Lakeland, Florida on December 29, 1928. After attending Florida Southern College, he went on to both the Florida State University and the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) for advanced degrees. His deepest desire was to be a doctor and he graduated from the University of Miami in 1960 as a Doctor of Medicine before completing an internship and residency at the City of Memphis Hospitals. He first practiced in Auburndale for several years before building his practice in Family Medicine in Winter Haven. Through his 38 years of practicing the healing arts he touched many families and became revered for his caring way.
He loved the Lord with all of his heart. His love of classical music was legendary, and he served as the Chairman of the Bach Festival of Central Florida and sang in the church choir. He loved baseball and enjoyed being the Physician for the Boston Red Sox during spring training for many years and enjoyed playing golf for decades.
Some of his most noted accomplishments include being President of the Polk County Medical Association, Chairman of the Medical Staff at Winter Haven Hospital, Commodore of the Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, being on the board of the Avery Development Corporation in Newland, North Carolina, and being a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason. He served as an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church and a Fellow in the Royal Society of Health.
He leaves behind his beloved and cherished wife, Sara, children: Beth Koon -Spiwak (Randy), James Koon (Mary Ann), Richard Koon (Kathy), and Tim Massam (Monica); grandchildren - Courtney, Mathew, Randi, and Hudson. He was preceded by son, Wiley, Jr.
The family would like to thank all who were part of his life and ours. He will be terribly missed.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven, Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. with a gathering to follow in McCloud Hall.
