Wiley Kenneth Teel

Funeral services for Wiley Teel, 78, of Portales will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Damon Stalvey officiating, assisted by Rev. Steve Brown. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with Austin Phillips, Michael R. Teel, Wayne Parkinson, Mike Teel, Donnie Massey and Lonnie Ridell serving as pallbearers. Wiley Kenneth Teel was born Jan. 1, 1945, in Portales to the home of Julia (Bynum) and Raymon Walter Teel, and died Aug. 7, 2023 in Portales. Wiley graduated from Portales High School in 1962, and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Eastern New Mexico University in 1966. On Aug. 21, 1966 at the Baptist Student Union, he was married to Barbara Parkinson. At that time, they moved to Albuquerque, where he began teaching Industrial Arts. A year later, he joined the National Guard. When he returned from training, he and his wife returned to Portales to resume their educations. He completed his Master's Degree in 1968, and resumed his teaching career in Albuquerque. He taught in the Albuquerque school system for 34 ½ years before retiring. During those years, he taught at Harrison Middle School, Eldorado High School, and finally at La Cueva High School. In the mid 1980's, Wiley was awarded a National Teacher's Award as an Industrial Ed Teacher. In addition to teaching, he also became a licensed contractor, and built houses on the side.
Following his retirement in 2000, he and Barbara returned to Roosevelt County to make their home. They first lived in Milnesand, where they both served as EMT's after getting their certifications at Clovis Community College. In 2013, they moved into Portales. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, and was currently serving as a Trustee for the First United Methodist Church in Portales. Wiley was very accomplished in antique furniture restoration, and also loved and collected antique cars.
He is survived by Barbara, his wife of just short of 57 years marriage of the home in Portales; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Danelle Teel of Albuquerque; a daughter, Melissa Phillips also of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Austin Phillips, Nathaniel Townsend, Savanna Teel, Ethan Townsend, and Michael R. Teel. Wiley was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Marion, and Dan Teel.
