William Warren Babson, Jr, known as Jack, distinguished general, vascular, and hand surgeon, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on May 14, 2025. Jack dedicated his life to the healing arts: touching lives with his exceptional skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his patients.
Born on December 10, 1939 with his twin Jill. He grew up in Gloucester, MA. With Jack's love of music he studied piano learning chords and perfected playing by ear. He played anywhere even in Vietnam.
Jack excelled and was chosen Valedictorian of Gloucester High School class of 1957. He attended Dartmouth College, Class of 1961, admitted to Dartmouth Medical School (a 2 year program) and graduated MD from Harvard Medical School. His internship was at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA.
As a patriot, Jack joined the military serving one year in Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star along with other awards as a Captain in Army Medical Corps. His second year was at Aberdeen Proving Ground where he met his future wife Annie Laurie Stuart. After completing his Army commitment, he did a three-year surgical residency at MCV, the last one as chief resident. This led him to private practice in Plymouth,MA.
His private surgical practice was with Jordan Hospital in Plymouth MA (now Beth Israel Deaconess) for 32 years, starting in June 1972.
Jack was a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and helped the medical community through Mass Medical Society, New England Surgical Society, and Society for Vascular Surgery. His colleagues admired him for his intellect, integrity, and compassion as he enhanced the lives of those he served.
At age 50 Jack was lucky to have a loving and flexible wife, Annie Laurie, who enabled him to take 6 month sabbatical to hike the Appalachian Trail, Georgia to Maine (2,190 miles), giving him a sense of self power. At 60 he hiked part of AT again. For many years he conquered many hiking trails, boated many rivers, and fished many rivers.
Jack supported Episcopal churches in Plymouth MA, Caribou, ME, Fort Fairfield,ME, and La Cañada, CA. as a believer in the love of God.
On retirement to Sinclair in northern Maine in 2004 Jack was happy to leave the discouraging world of American medicine.
For 10 years they enjoyed crossing the country in their motorhome for winters in Montrose, CA then returning to Maine.
Jack had a profound appreciation for nature throughout his life and supported organizations including Sierra Club, Trout Unlimited, Doctors Without Borders, Atlantic Salmon Association, Pasadena Casting Club, AppalachianTrail Conservancy (Appalachian Mountain Club), and Disabled American Veterans.
.
Jack was cherished by his wife, Annie Laurie Babson, and their two children, Alice Stuart Babson and Daniel Kelly Babson, and grandchildren Aleksay and Laurel. Jack is also survived by twin sister Jill, brother Thomas Wilbon Babson, and wife Kelly(Dunn), and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Warren and Anne, brother-in-law D. Martin Carter, and brother David Elmer and wife Mary LaVilla Cogswell(Val) Babson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christ Church Food of one's choice. A funeral service will be held on July 12, 2025 at noon at Christ Episcopal Church, Plymouth, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Jack's remarkable life and legacy.

Dear Mrs. Babson and family,
We are so sorry to hear about Dr. Babson's passing. He was a very kind man and we always enjoyed seeing you both in church. My mom, Marie Kraus, still speaks fondly about her years working with Dr. Babson at the Jordan. May he rest in Peace, and may the memories that you cherish and the love you all shared comfort you and give you Peace.
