William L. "Bill" Basnett, age 91, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Osage Beach Rehabilitation, Osage Beach, Mo.
He was born on November 1, 1932, in St. Louis County, Mo., one of eight children born to Lemuel and Bertha (Shanks) Basnett.
Bill had been a resident of the central Missouri area since 1938 when his family relocated to Jefferson City.
Before his military service, he worked as a forklift operator at Von Hoffman Press. Bill proudly served his country as a career veteran, dedicating two years in the United States Army during the Korean War, four years in the United States Navy, and 14 years in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as a Gunnery Sergeant (GYSGT) on June 30, 1975. Following his discharge, he returned to Jefferson City and remained until his passing.
Bill was simple man, enjoying his solitude. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed being active by playing softball and bowling.
Survivors include his two brothers, Paul Basnett (Phyllis) of Lebanon, Mo., and Larry Basnett (Joyce) of Jefferson City; his loving caregivers, Dickie Roark (Wanda); special friend, Phyllis Wright; one sister-in-law, Sarah Basnett and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, infant Juanita Basnett, Lemuel Basnett, Betty Dunavant (Kenny), Lillie Roark (Dick), and Dorothy Whittle (Mark); nieces, Pam Moyer and Patty Basnett.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Freeman Mortuary.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Riverview Cemetery with the Reverend Lowell Perkins officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
