William Cornes Obituary

Augusta, GA – William (Bill) Cornes (77) of Augusta entered into rest on July 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He is now in the loving hands of our Lord. He is survived by his beloved wife Virginia (Ginger) Walker Cornes. They were happily married for 47 years.

Funeral services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on August 4, 2025, at 2:00 pm and interment will be held in a private burial at Westover Memorial Park. The Rev. Andy Cooke of Covenant Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitation will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church after the service.

Mr. Cornes was preceded in death by his parents Julius Edwin Cornes Sr. and Willie Mae Lowe Cornes. He was also preceded in death by his brother Julius Edwin Cornes, Jr. (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and his sister Nancy Lowe Richardson (Chattanooga, Tenn.).

He is survived by his beloved son Travis Cornes of Salt Lake City, Utah. Also, his stepdaughter Aubrey Willingham Weekley and stepson David Center Willingham, Jr. He had one granddaughter McKenzie Weekley Howard whom he adored and who was the apple of his eye. He was so proud of her and her many awards and accomplishments. He was also survived by his sister-in-law Martha Walker Roberts (Haley) and brother-in-law Benjamin Pierce Walker (Gail). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Bill graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1969 with a BS Degree in Economics and Finance. He was an honor graduate and was co-founder of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at MTSU. He was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1969. He received The Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award in 1969 which recognized the outstanding Senior majoring in Economics and Finance with the highest overall grade point average. He was also an advanced ROTC Scholarship graduate and a member of Circle K Club.

Mr. Cornes was also a former Captain in the U.S. Army where he served in the Armor Branch. He was Commanding Officer of an Armor Tank company in Germany from 1970-72. He served as Personnel and Administrative Officer and a Calvary Troop Commander in South Korea from 1972-73. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he moved to Augusta to become a Financial Investment Consultant. After a debilitating stroke in 2005, he retired as a Financial Consultant with Wells Fargo.

He was a devoted member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served twice as an Elder and nine years as a Trustee. He also served on the Stewardship Ministry, Fellowship Ministry, Nominating Committee, and Chairman of the Worship Committee for two years.
