William Ernest "Ernie" Black, age 76, of Winnsboro, SC, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026.

Born on December 13, 1949, in York, SC. Ernie was the son of Leonard Spratt and Kitty Mae McCorkle Black. He lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, and devotion to those he loved.

After graduating from Winnsboro High School, Ernie began his career as an auto mechanic. He had a strong work ethic and was the Co-Owner of Pope Chrysler in Winnsboro until he retired in 1999. Ernie won many awards for excellence in his profession.

Ernie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed building race cars, fishing with his grandson and friends, playing golf, and spending time tinkering around with lots of different projects. If something was broken Ernie would fix it. Ernie cherished the time with his friends. As one of the founding members of the Circle of Knowledge, he and his friends solved many of the world's problems in their meetings. Known for his steady presence and kind heart, he will be remembered for his wisdom, quiet strength, and willingness to help others.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Thomas Spratt Black, Mary Frances Kelley, James Malcolm Black, Robert Leonard Black, and Anne Black Wicker.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Gail Cooper Black; son, Will Black Jr. (Lori); grandson, Kyle Black; and great-grandson, Hartley James and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Fairfield Memorial Cemetery in Winnsboro. The family will receive friends at graveside immediately following the service.
