William J. Calpin, 94, formerly of the Green Ridge section of Scranton, died Tuesday at Allied Services Hospice Center.

Born in Scranton, he was a son of the late William G. and Winifred Brown Calpin. A graduate of Holy Rosary High School, he attended the University of Pennsylvania before serving in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war he briefly worked for the Internal Revenue Service before taking ownership of Lackawanna Cinder and Silt Company and later Goodman Cinderblock Company.

A well-known and respected businessman in the community, he was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Catherine Davis, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and Bridget Halloran and her husband, Joseph, of Clarks Summit; two sons, William J. Calpin Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Dunmore; and Patrick Calpin, of Scranton; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his dear friend and companion of many years, Anne Marie Regan.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Sean and Timothy Calpin; and two granddaughters, Molly Calpin and Megan Calpin Hughes; and a sister, Eileen Kollra; and a brother, John Calpin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, celebrated by Monsignor Neil Van Loon, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, PA 18505.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Molly Calpin and Megan Calpin Hughes Fund or the Sean J. Calpin Automotive Technology Scholarship Fund, both administered by the Scranton Area Foundation, 601 Jefferson Ave., Suite 102, Scranton PA 18510.
