Born on May 23, 1954 to George Francis and Gloria Carlisle Carraway, David was the third of four children. Growing up he enjoyed working on the farm, football, riding horses, fast cars, duck hunting and the Auburn tigers. His interest in farming led to an early career raising livestock and he made sure to plant a large garden in the spring helping to provide fresh food for the family and a learning experience for his children. He later expanded on his love of the outdoors becoming involved in conservation efforts for waterfowl and endangered wetlands and earned a masters degree in environmental management. He loved his family and friends and spent a lot of time helping others. Being with his grandchildren was a highlight in his life. He was always willing to embark on a new adventure. David loved to tell stories about these adventures and share fond memories from his past. He was a deep thinker, loved to learn, and loved life. His favorite song was "How Great Thou Art."
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mary Papenburg Carraway; two children, Bridget Penaskovic (Kenan), and Martin Carraway; his beloved grandchildren; two sisters, Ann Frances "Franny" Adair and Carol Terry (Mike); and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
William was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gloria Carraway; and one brother, George Martin "Brother" Carraway.
Pallbearers will be Gerry Don Delashaw, Gerald Dodd, Alan Graham, Steve McLemore, Mitch Rollins, and Lee Slaton. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Coffey and Wes Irwin.
The family extends special thanks to Summerford Health and Rehab, Aveanna Hospice, and the many friends and family who have supported him.
