FITCHBURG - William P. Durkin, 90, formerly of Winchester, New Hampshire and Fitchburg, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, September 1, 2025 in the Falmouth Hospital in Falmouth, MA. A deeply beloved family member, Bill was born in Fitchburg, MA. on December 18, 1934, a son of the late Clarence J. and Katherine M. (Shea) Durkin, and grew up in the city, graduating from St. Bernard's High School. Shortly after graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served from 1955 to 1957. Bill was a second-generation union electrician working for the IBEW local 96 shoulder-to-shoulder with his brother Bob for more than 50 years. They worked all over the US on major construction projects, including the World Trade Center in NYC and the Seabrook nuclear power plant. Bill and Bob enjoyed working on their quiet lake-side cottage in New Hampshire and following their beloved Boston sports teams. They were also avid harness racing fans and owned 2 horses that they raced at The Hinsdale Harness racing track in New Hampshire. Bill leaves a brother, Thomas H. Durkin of Falmouth and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. He is predeceased by a brother, Robert J. Durkin, and his three sisters, Rosemary A. Gelep, Anne F. Walsh, and Kathryne J. Cormier. Everyone who met Bill said what a sweet man he was, and being around him lifted people's spirits. After moving to Falmouth earlier this year to be near his brother Tom, he loved going to church together on Sundays, enthusiastically singing the hymns, and then visiting with family over a delicious brunch made by his niece Pattee. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on September 10th at 11 AM in St. Bernard's Parish at St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org/).
