William Flygare Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Gloucester on Jul. 7, 2022.
William H. Flygare, Jr., 80, of Gloucester passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Seacoast Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband and best friend to Joyce L. (Young) Flygare with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
Bill was born on September 28, 1941 in Gloucester. He is the son of the late Louise Wheeler Azevedo and her husband Frank as well as his late father William Flygare. He was a Gloucester High School graduate class of 1959, a graduate of the United States Military Academy Prep School, and Salem State College.
He served with pride in the United States Army as a radar control operator. He worked for over 40 years for two major insurance companies, 36 of which as a claims manager. He also worked for three banks in Gloucester.
After retirement he was self-employed doing insurance surcharge hearings. More recently he also worked as a substitute school teacher for the Gloucester Public School System and helped teach drums to the afterschool band to students. He also worked a couple summers as a parking attendant at the Gloucester beaches. He loved the sun and he loved the heat. He also became a Justice of the Peace and had the pleasure of marrying many couples as well as family members.
He was a member of the Cape Ann Bible Church where he served as an Elder for many years. His church family also held a special place in his heart. He loved Mickey Mouse and was a Disney World enthusiast. He enjoyed many family vacations there with his children and grandchildren.
Next to his family his passion was band. He led the Boston Firemen's Band down the street as its Drum Major for 20 years. He played snare drum in the Boy Scout Drum & Bugle Corps, the GHS ROTC Band, the American Legion Band, the Gloucester Manchester Union Band, the Atlantic Brassman Drum & Bugle Corps, the Cape Ann Community Band, and most recently had been doing the announcing for the North Shore Concert Band. In his healthier years he loved to play golf with his best friend Vince Asaro.
In addition to the love of his life Joyce, Bill will be sadly missed by his 3 children, Bill and his wife Ruby, Amy and her husband Michael Gaipo, and Danielle and her partner Rich Buonaugurio. He leaves behind his sister Penny Riley and her husband Jim. And a brother in- law Kenneth Gossom. He was predeceased by his sister Cheryl Gossom.
He was blessed with 7 grandchildren, Max Hamilton and his wife Stephanie, Caitlin Buotte and her husband Marc, Brandon and Rachel Flygare, Logan and Olivia Gaipo, and Charles William Buonaugurio. He also had two great grandchildren, Tripp William and Bo Buotte. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He touched so many lives and was absolutely adored by all who knew him.
A funeral service for Bill will be celebrated at the Cape Ann Bible Church on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at 11am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. I am so sad to read about Bill's passing. I was a GHS classmate of his, and remember him as such a wonderful person. We all appreciate his continuous hard work on keeping our 1959 class together through his dedication to planning our class reunions. You will be missed. My deeepest condolences to Joyce and family.
