William Roy Furches, age 91, went to be with the Lord on June 20, 2024. He passed away at Coastal Hospice by The Lake in Salisbury, Maryland. He was born on January 18, 1933 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina to his parents, Robert Alex and Sallie Ellen Furches.
Roy attended Louisiana College in Pineville Louisiana and William Jewell College in Liberty Missouri. Following his education, Roy was ordained as a Southern Baptist Minister and preached in a number of churches before changing careers and working in the water/wastewater field. He retired as an executive from Sussex Service Authority in Waverly Virginia.
Roy grew up working on the farm with his family and then went into the Army where he served in Panama during the Korean War as a Military Police Officer. He was an excellent marksman with the Army's M1911 handgun, competing with the best. He obtained the many licenses required for his career in water/wastewater, a captain's license and a pilot's license. He volunteered his small private plane and served in the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling with his wife, Dorothy. He was an inventor, designing and making things even into his last months. In 1958, he obtained a patent for a new steering design for tractors.
He is survived by his two children, Bryan Furches and his wife Mary and Cheryl Furches and three grandchildren, Elyse Abercrombie, Grace Furches and Aaron Furches. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Dorothy.
Roy would say: "When this life is over, my life begins."
A small private memorial service will be held at Henlopen Memorial Park in Milton Delaware and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to Coastal Hospice at The Lake in Salisbury, Maryland.
