It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bill Govoni at his home in East Bridgewater on Saturday, October 11, 2025, following a period of declining health. Or as Bill would say, “His promotion came through!” Bill was the beloved and adored husband of Terry DeArruda for 29 years.
Born in Brockton to John and Mildred (Guinasso) Govoni, Bill grew up beside Christ the King (St. Colman’s) Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy. After being asked to fill in for missing servers one too many times, he learned to make a quick exit through the side door—eager to join his many neighborhood friends.
A graduate of Brockton High School, Bill was a manager of the football team coached by the legendary Armond Colombo. He later served proudly in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class at Fort Benning, Georgia, where his leadership was quickly recognized. Though encouraged to remain in the military, Bill decided to return home to the city he loved.
He went on to enjoy a 35-year career with Knapp Shoes, rising from the warehouse to become National Retail Operations Manager for more than 200 stores nationwide. One highlight was being asked to join an elite corporate team to participate in the first-ever Hurricane Island Outward Bound professional program in Camden, Maine—a reflection of his athleticism and adventurous spirit.
Bill was fun-loving, easygoing, and had a zest for life. From singing and playing his guitar, boating, playing sports, rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots, and traveling to Florida to visit family and dear friends, to dancing with Terry—always sweeping her off her feet—he enjoyed every moment of his 91 years.
Bill cherished the memories he shared with his children as they grew up—the skiing vacations, the Brant Rock summer adventures, and the everyday champion he was in helping them succeed in their adult lives. He is survived by his sons Peter Govoni (Kim) of Amesbury, MA, and Jeff Govoni of San Diego, CA; grandchildren Mia, Isabella, and Aiden; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Gina, and by siblings John (Moyra) Govoni, Jean (George) Cotter, Frank Govoni, and Linda Boucher.
Bill, like his brother-in-law, George Cotter, was an advocate for anyone who wanted to further their education. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Cotter Memorial Scholarship, c/o St. Bridget’s School, 455 Plymouth St., Abington, MA 02351, or to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.
Interment with military honors will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 11:30 a.m.
