William Green Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by South Carolina Cremation Society - West Columbia on Jan. 21, 2026.
William Edwin "Win" Green III, MD, 67, of Chapin, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 19, 2026.

Born in 1958, in Atlanta, Georgia, as the eldest child of William "Ed" Green, DDS, and Ann Cassels Whitehead, Win grew up loving arrowhead hunting, fishing on Lake Lanier (or virtually any body of water), and family RV camping.

Win graduated from the University of Georgia in 1981 with a BS in Microbiology and from the Medical College of Georgia in 1985. A triple-board-certified psychiatrist specializing in addiction medicine, aerospace psychiatry, and neuropsychiatry, he served as Associate Professor of Neuropsychiatry at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Also, as the State Director of Psychiatric Services for the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. After retirement, he maintained a private practice in Columbia, SC, consulting on aviation-related psychiatric and addiction issues through the FAA HIMS program.

A dedicated supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Win championed recovery, offering guidance, encouragement, and hope to countless individuals seeking sobriety.

A lifelong outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, and amateur forester, Win was passionate about sustainable land management. Together with his wife, Carolyn, their forest and wildlife management efforts earned their family timber farm the "Stewardship Forest" designation in South Carolina; a testament to their dedication to preserving nature for future generations.

Win and his loving wife of 42 years, Carolyn loved cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs. Together they enjoyed traveling, Airstream camping, and boating with their family on Lake Murray. They recently started a new group "Camping for Christ", an outreach ministry for their church, Chapin Christian Community Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; children, William E. "Bill" Green IV, Meghan (Tyler) Daniels, and Tanner Green; his beautiful new granddaughter, Emily Daniels; brothers, Richard (Betsy) Green, Jeff Green, Neal Green, and Parker (Jessica) Green; sister, Tate (Mark) Danaher; nieces, nephews, many cousins, aunts, and an uncle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and beloved in-laws. Win will be remembered for his brilliant expertise, compassionate care, steadfast commitment to recovery and those with disabilities, deep love of nature, and profound devotion to his family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Chapin Christian Community Church, 415 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Cerebral Palsy of South Carolina (UCP of SC) which supports individuals with developmental disabilities.

I am so very sorry about your loss. May the Lord comfort you and your family during this time of loss and sorrow.
Win was a wonderful man, husband and father. I know he loved you and your family more than words can say. The world is a better place because of him. I regret I couldn“t have seen him once more. My heart aches.
