Deacon William Hunter III

We celebrate the life of William Howard Hunter III, affectionately known by many as "Deac." A man of faith, laughter, and craftsmanship, William transitioned peacefully on September 10, 2025, after a valiant health journey-surrounded by the loving presence of his three children, just as he had wished. William was born on May 23, 1960, in Brunswick, Georgia, to Geraldine Hayes, and was lovingly brought into the world by a midwife. Soon after birth, William was adopted by the late William (Willie) and Mary Hunter Jr. of St. Simons Island, GA, where he was raised in a home rooted in Christian love, discipline, and strong family values through Shiloh Baptist Church. He was educated in the Glynn County School System and graduated from Glynn Academy High School in 1978. After graduation, William proudly served in the United States Navy, but his heart eventually led him back home to the community and family he cherished most.
Over the years, William became a Master Carpenter, using his hands and vision to build, repair, and create lasting beauty. Even as his health began to change, his passion for carpentry never wavered. In addition to his craftsmanship, William took great pride in serving his community through the Glynn County Board of Elections and Registration. What began as a role as a dedicated Poll Worker grew into his appointment as a Poll Manager, where he carried himself with integrity, patience, and professionalism. Even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and during his early cancer treatments, William remained steadfast in his commitment-working diligently, without complaint or ailment, to ensure that every voice in his community was heard. His service reflected his deep love for people and his belief in doing all things with excellence and grace. Beyond his work in the community,
William found great purpose in serving the Lord and his church. As Chairman of the Deacon Board at Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, he carried himself with humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith. He took his calling seriously-guiding younger deacons, supporting his pastor, and ensuring that the Church's ministries operated in love and order. Whether visiting the sick, opening devotion, or quietly helping behind the scenes, William's service was never about recognition-it was about obedience to God. His leadership reflected his deep belief that serving God's people is one of the highest honors a man can hold. Known far and wide as "Deac," a name affectionately given by childhood friends, street friends, family, and his beloved church community, "Deac" was more than a nickname-it was a testimony of God's grace and faithfulness. His spirit was magnetic. His faith was unshakable. His presence was unforgettable.
In the final chapter of his life, William and God had a heart-to-heart. He shared with his children that he was ready to come home-home to family, to familiar smiles, to peace. And that's exactly what he did. He spent his remaining days laughing, reminiscing, and embracing the beautiful life and legacy God had given him. He is survived by his biological mother, Geraldine Hayes, and his three loving children: MarLana Clinch-Williams, William H. Hunter IV, and Chandra (Bernard) Baker. He was a proud grandfather to Jada Hunter, Bella Williams, Anthony Ladson Jr., Allen Hunter, Zy'Keria Hunter, William Hunter V, and Zalayah Hunter-each of whom carries a piece of his legacy forward. He also leaves behind his siblings: Kenneth (Gail) Hayes, Conyers (Betty) Hayes, Barbara Johnson, Vincent Green, Rhonda (Sammy) Hayes-Hines, Elmer James Hayes III, and Darrell (Varie) Hayes. He is also lovingly remembered by his paternal brothers, Sidney and Bruce Atkinson. A special bond was shared with his pastor and best friend, Pastor Jimmie (Juanita) Johnson. William's life was deeply enriched by the relationships he nurtured. Among those who held a special place in his heart is his former wife, Valerie Oglesby-Collins, with whom he shared years of family, love, and growth. He also leaves cherished memories with his sister-in-law Sharon (Willie) Murray, Juanita (Jimmie) Johnson, and brother-in-law Kyle, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
