William Timmons "Tim" Johnson Jr., 94, of
Conway, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025. Son of the late William Timmons Johnson Sr. and Mildred Schulemeyer Johnson, Tim was born in Marion County on December 23, 1930 at the home of his maternal grandparents. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Conway and the Angler Sunday School class. He was a member of the Conway 65 Masonic Lodge. He was a true southern gentleman.
Tim grew up in Conway and attended Conway area schools. He joined the United States Navy in 1947, serving on the USS Stockham and the USS Marsh destroyers during the Korean War, and enjoyed telling about the places he saw. He was proud to receive the Quilt of Valor in partnership the Quilts of Valor Foundation and Horry Electric Cooperative in 2018.
After serving, he returned to South Carolina and received his undergraduate degree in Business from the University of South Carolina and his Juris Doctorate from the USC School of Law. While in college he met the love of his life, Mary Frances Coker, on a blind date and they were married a year later. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar Association and the Horry County Bar Association in April of 1962 and returned to Conway to practice law, which he did until retirement in 2021.
He was chosen to serve on the Board of Trustees of Conway Hospital in 1975. While serving as president of the Board, he played a pivotal role in the construction of what is now Conway Medical Center. He also served on the Board of the Anchor Bank.
Tim served as legal counsel for Horry Electric Cooperative from 1996 to 2018 where he provided valuable guidance to the Board of Trustees and earned the respect of the Board for his advice, counsel, and friendship.
He was most honored to have been a part of the efforts to get potable water to the people of the Bucksport Community in the mid-1960s, and was instrumental in the incorporation of Bucksport Water System, Inc and served as legal counsel from its inception in 1968 until his retirement in 2021.
In 2023, he was humbled to be inducted into the Conway High School Educational Foundation Hall of Fame as an Outstanding Alumni, and found that to be a great honor.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Frances Coker Johnson, and his son William Timmons "Trey" Johnson III. He is also predeceased by his brother Lloyd Parker and his wife Lorraine, and his brother Thurlow Parker and his wife Rosemary, and sister Betty Jane Johnson Sams and her husband Reeve.
Surviving are his daughter Laura Johnson Edge and husband Edsol; grandson Jerry Edsol Edge, III and his wife Sarah; and granddaughter Laura Coker Edge Hall and husband Sam. Also surviving are his four great grandchildren Mary Parker Edge, Laura Winburn "Winnie" Hall, Kate Roberts Edge, and Walter "Walt" Edge Hall, and many nieces, nephews, and their children. He spent his life surrounded by many friends that were like family.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Lakeside Cemetery in Conway, officiated by Rev. Rocky Taylor. Visitation will immediately follow the service. The family will receive friends at the home. Tim will be deeply missed, but his legacy and service to others will continue to inspire all who knew him.
