William Lavin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Jan. 30, 2024.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of William "Bill" Joseph Lavin, of Newbury, Ohio, on January 19, 2024, at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland, Ohio. A courageous and resilient soul, Bill faced a brave battle with cancer at the age of 77. Born on October 2, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, to Leo Lawrence and Pearl (nee: Karp) Lavin, Bill's legacy is one of love, dedication, and a passion for life.
Bill is survived by his beloved son, Ken (Stacie) Lavin, and his loving grandson, Niko Lavin and his (fiancé Devyn Paige Strausbaugh). He was the dearest brother to Janet (Lavin) Ganim and Lynda A. Lavin, and a cherished son of the late Leo Lavin and Pearl Karp Lavin. His role as an uncle, great uncle, and friend left a lasting impact on many lives.
A distinguished scholar, Bill graduated from Shaker Heights High School, earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Kent State University, and received his law degree while attending Cleveland State School of Law.
Bill's heart was as expansive as his accomplishments. A true people person, he thrived in the company of friends and family. His love extended to the animal kingdom, evident in his lifelong companionship with dogs and cats.
For many years, Bill dedicated himself to Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center and the Path International Therapeutic Organization. As a Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructor, Ohio state chair, and region 4 representative, Bill was a driving force in the community. He served as past chair of the PATH Intl. Membership Outreach Committee (MOC), member of the PATH Intl. Credentialing Council, and was chair and vice-chair of the council. Bill was also a PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and PATH Intl. Lead Site Visitor.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Bill found joy in travel and meticulously researched his family ancestry. In his retirement, he became an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Chardon, Ohio.
To honor Bill's remarkable life, a Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at his church in the near future, bringing together family and friends to reminisce and celebrate the profound impact he had on all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center or a cancer research organization of your choice.
Bill's spirit, kindness, and love will forever resonate in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in eternal peace.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Burr Funeral Home in Chardon, Ohio. Information and condolences online at www.burrservice.com.

As a boundary-pushing teenager at Warrensville Heights High School in the early 70´s, Mr. Lavin gave me grace when I least deserved it. He was so kind-hearted, with a tremendous wit. He will be greatly missed.
