William Albert (Bill) Lewellyn, age 89, of Powell, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2025, at UT Medical Center. He was born January 28, 1936, in
Knoxville, Tennessee.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Johnnie Lee Lewellyn; his parents, James and Bessie Lewellyn; sisters, Hazel Scott, Wilma Warwick, and Catherine (Janie) Reyes; and brothers James Edward (Eddie) Lewellyn and Jerry Lewellyn.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Michelle Taylor; son, William Bryan Lewellyn (wife Karla); and granddaughters Emily Mason (husband Judson) and Isabella Taylor; as well as several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank neighbors Jim and Lori Weaver for their friendship, especially their attention to and assistance with checking in on Bill and Johnnie the last couple of years of their lives.
Born in
Knoxville, Tennessee, Bill grew up in the Lonsdale community. After meeting and marrying his wife, Johnnie, the couple lived in Fort Lewis, Washington for four years, where Bill served in the U.S. Army Special Forces.
After his military duty was finished, Bill worked as a carpenter for Earnest Whedbee in all facets of construction, from the initial framing to the detailed finish carpentry work. Bill then began working at Rohm and Haas as a carpenter, working his way up the company through both hard work and obtaining associate degrees from Tennessee College of Applied Technology. He subsequently became a refrigeration expert and, finally, the Chief Master Electrician at Rohm and Haas, from where he eventually retired after 32 years.
Bill and Johnnie settled in Powell, Tennessee, where they built their home and started a family. They were longtime members of Knoxville Baptist Tabernacle under the preaching of Dr. Robert (Brother Bob) Bevington.
Some of Bill's greatest memories are from growing up in Lonsdale and traveling to Canada, New England, Daytona Beach, Florida, and many trips to Savannah, Georgia, visiting his brother and sister-in-law.
A lifelong learner, Bill enjoyed woodworking, reading, meeting new people, and expanding his vocabulary and knowledge daily. He relished lengthy, in-depth conversations about a wide range of topics, enjoying witty banter with anyone up to the challenge.
An unforgettable man, Bill was known for his transparent honesty, laudable work ethic, and devotion to those he loved. He was profoundly steadfast and highly consistent in his daily walk, whether it be his strong convictions, sharp mind, neatly-pressed trousers and newsboy cap, or ready smile - from hearing, or, more often, telling - a good joke.
Family and friends will meet at Greenwood Cemetery, 3500 Tazewell Pike at 12:45 PM on April 25, 2025, for a 1:00 PM graveside service, with Pastor Bill Roehl officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill Lewellyn's honor can be made to
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
