Bill Was Born at Saint Mary's Hospital in Los Angeles, California on January 17, 1947. His parents are Mary Lorraine Mulholland from Sioux City, Iowa and John Richard Ludlum from Indianapolis, Indiana. Bill lived the the first years of his life in Westchester, California, on what is now an LAX runway.
Bill's family then moved to Glendale, California where he enjoyed happy years first attending St. Robert Bellarmine Parochial Elementary School In Burbank California. Bill attended and graduated from Herbert Hoover High school in Glendale. While there he met his two long time best friends Ed Malouf and Tom Rebd. They spent many hours trying to develop their basketball skills at McCambridge Gym. After their high school graduation, Bill, Tom and another friend Kenny Huffman celebrated by driving a family station wagon and camping all the way from California to New York and back.
Bill attended Glendale Jr. college then The University of California at Santa Barbara, graduating with a BA degree in History and Political Science. One summer he also did an internship in Sacramento with a friend named Charles Schumer who would go on to be a leader in Congress.
One of the highlights of these years was that Bill and his good friend Ed were able to drive up and attend the Monterey Pop Festival! He said that in their white shirts and black pants they looked like Federal Agents and everyone stayed far away! But the music was incredible !
After graduating from UCSB, Bill managed a warehouse to put himself through Law School at the San Fernando Valley College of Law... Being hard working and brilliant Bill passed the California Bar on his first try and was hired by the US Department of Treasury and enjoyed working there for most of his over 40 year career.
Bill met his pediatrician wife Dr. Noelani Apau Ludlum on a double blind date, a friend knew Bill and another friend knew Noe. They were engaged on Easter at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. They were married at The Kahala Hilton by The Reverend Abraham Akaka, then honeymooned in Europe for three incredibly romantic weeks.
Bill and Noe lived in Honolulu, Hawaii then Glendale, California, moving back to Honolulu. Bill was a lifelong scholar with a deep and lasting interest in history and political science and had an amazing library of books.
Bill truly loved Baseball and was a devoted lifelong LA Dodger's fan. He played baseball with a Dodgers League in Los Angeles then Honolulu. And He really enjoyed helping coach seniors men's baseball in Honolulu and California.
Bill was also a great organizer and donated his legal knowledge to Sally Akaka's Kawaiahao Church Personnel Committee and was on his Ala Wailani Owners Board for 30 years.
Bill is survived by his wife of almost 40 years Dr. Noelani Apau Ludlum, his Brother James Ludlum, his niece Sarah Jayne Ludlum, grand niece Sadie Jayne, grand nephew Declan Jefferson Ludlum Brother-in-law Dr. Richard Kaukapono Apau, Sister-in-law Selena Apau, numerous Apau family relatives and Wonderful lifelong friends.
His family especially wants to thank Everyone who Loved Bill as well as Straub Hospital, Maluhia Nursing Home, St. Francis Hospice, Oahu Cemetery and Hawaiian Memorial Cemetary for all of their very kind, understanding and excellent, comforting help and care at this difficult time.
