William Richard “Dick” Lyman

William Richard “Dick” Lyman, 99 and 7/8, a longtime resident of Bountiful, passed away peacefully at Welcome Home Assisted Living early in the morning on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Born November 27, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Dick was the third of eight children of William Amasa and Dorothy Harriet Marsh Lyman.

Raised and schooled in Salt Lake City, Dick graduated from South High School Class of 1943 and worked at Tingey Farms in Centerville. It was during this time that he met his future bride, Colleen Greenhalgh.

Dick enlisted in the United States Army during the last 15 months of World War II and was honorably discharged as a Private First Class.

After the war, Dick courted Colleen, and they were married on November 12, 1947, sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity. They celebrated 70 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2018 and they are now reunited.

Dick began his career at General Motors, then worked for Collette Tank Lines, which became Pacific Intermountain Express, or PIE Tank Lines, and then transferred to the Freight Division. At the time of his retirement in 1987, Dick was 62 and was the Shop Foreman, serving as a Senior Diesel Mechanic Machinist.

Dick enjoyed fishing and hunting, bowling, croquet and horseshoes, picking on grandkids until they cried, etc. He loved politics, basketball, and football. He solved all of the world’s problems right from his own living room. He coached baseball and was very good at it. He was an avid fan of Publishers Clearing House. Dick was also very artistic. He was a rockhound and a collector, who loved to paint rocks and make gadgets out of spent tools and spare parts.

His other hobbies included gardening and landscaping. He and Colleen were recognized by Davis County for the Most Beautiful Yard in 1994, 1996, and 1998.

Dick was a self-taught organ player. He learned on a Wurlitzer organ and maintained this hobby throughout his life.

Dick loved going to Yellowstone and took the family nearly every year. He also was known to run out of gas on a regular basis driving to find a cheaper price.

Dick and Colleen traveled to Germany with some of their best friends and shared other fond memories traveling together.

Dick will be remembered most for being loving. He was also a real jokester, a master storyteller and memory builder, a game-changer (well, at least the rules – we had to watch him like a hawk), a huge flirt, a pathological compliment giver, and he truly loved doing things for others.

He was snow blowing the yards of his neighbors into his upper 90s.

Dick was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings over the years. Being a Scoutmaster and delivering food to the local food banks were among some of his favorite charitable activities. Despite all the changes and additions, Dick was a member of the Bountiful 13th Ward since 1957. A 64-year legacy!

He was generous with his time and his talents and loved to make others feel special. He will be dearly missed by all his family and by many of his ward family, too.

Dick is survived by his children, Gary R. (Novie) Lyman, Boring, OR; Debbie (Gary) Pedersen, Syracuse, UT; and Gail (Rhonda) Lyman, Sandy, UT; 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his dear wife, by all of his siblings, Grace, Virginia, Lillian, Milton & Melvin, Louise, and Don; and by one grandchild, Joy Pedersen-Hyde and by daughter-in-law Marsha Perkins Lyman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N 400 E.

Friends may visit family from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Tuesday at the mortuary.

Interment, where military honors will be accorded, will follow at Lakeview Bountiful Cemetery.
