Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sweet's Funeral Home on Feb. 8, 2026.
William S. Masterson Sr., 85, of Staatsburg, passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Hudson Valley Hospice House in Hyde Park, with his family by his side.

Born, March 19, 1940, in Poughkeepsie, to the late William Masterson Sr. and Mary Stevens Masterson.

A dedicated educator, Bill worked for the Wappingers Central School District for many years as a history teacher at John Jay High School teaching social studies. He proudly coached both girls' and boys' soccer at the high school. William was passionate about teaching and took great joy in sharing his love of soccer with generations of students and athletes.

Known for his sarcastic sense of humor and love of puns, William brought laughter wherever he went. He enjoyed reading, long walks by the river, skipping rocks, and spending time with his family. He especially cherished time at the ocean and spontaneous car rides that often turned into adventures, ending wherever and whenever the road led.

William proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962.

On Saturday, May 17, 2003, in Beacon, he married Barbara Ostberg Masterson, Mrs. Masterson survives at home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jeffery Masterson and his wife Natalie; Kelly Carmody and her husband James; Dennis Wood; and Carrie Wood and her husband Mike Dougherty; and William Masterson Jr.

He was a loving grandfather to Cooper Masterson, Dylan Carmody, Jordan Dougherty, Michelle Dougherty, Michael Dougherty Jr., and Sean Dougherty, and a cherished great-grandfather to Emma Moshref. He is also survived by his sister, Judy VanNorstrand.

In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place, services will be held at a later date.

The Masterson family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to Hudson Valley Hospice, in gratitude for the compassionate care William received. 80 Washington St. Suite 204, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. (www.hvhospice.org)
